One of the worst kept secrets ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft became reality on Thursday night.
Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza was announced as the No. 1 overall pick by the Las Vegas Raiders. The Heisman Trophy winner moves into the role of being the next starter in Sin City. He'll be under Tom Brady, the minority owner of the Raiders, and new head coach Klint Kubiak.
One of the best situations for Mendoza to thrive in the league with an underrated setup. While the Raiders did have the worst record, this is where he can come in and help rebuild a once proud franchise.
"Mendoza will sign a four-year contract, with a team option for a fifth year, for $54.56 million," according to NFL insider Andrew Brandt. "That's a lot, but his average salary will be one of, if not the lowest in the NFL for a starting quarterback."
Not a terrible rookie deal for Mendoza to come into Las Vegas and prove himself. He had been working with Brian Griese to understand the Raiders' offense before being drafted by the team. A huge step forward for him to hit the ground running in OTAs and training camp.
The specific details of Fernando Mendoza's rookie contract have not been disclosed yet.
Klint Kubiak is the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Mendoza wasn't on hand in Pittsburgh and opted to celebrate the moment in Miami with his family. âPittsburgh is a great opportunity, and itâs a great venue, and Iâm really excited to see all the guys or most of the guys walk across the stage on Thursday night,â he told Rich Eisen on SportsCenter on April 20. âHowever, my mom really wanted to do it at home and so did my parents, itâs a lot easier for us, especially with the family situation.â
