Fernando Morientes has called on Real Madrid to provide greater backing to the "spectacular' Kylian Mbappe following a tumultuous week in the Spanish capital.
Even without the injured Lamine Yamal, Barcelona's 2-0 victory over Real Madrid in El Clásico was enough to secure them a second straight La Liga title. The win means the Blaugrana are now 29-time champions, and winning this latest crown against their greatest and most fierce rivals is the cherry on top.
Mbappe, who is targeting a second FIFA World Cup title with France this summer, was not in the squad for El Clásico. The 27-year-old is managing a hamstring injury, while he was at the heart of a training ground incident between the forward and Madrid's coaching team in the build-up to the draw with Real Betis last month, as per The Mirror US.

Statistically, Mbappe has few detractors. He is largely seen as one of the best players in the world and has amassed a remarkable 41 goals in 41 appearances across the 2025-26 season. And yet, he still faces critics; a petition to oust him from Madrid has reached over 73 million signatures.
Morientes is definitely surprised. As a former Madrid striker himself who scored 100 goals for Los Blancos, the Spaniard understands the pressure of leading the charge for one of the biggest and most successful clubs in the global soccer.
"In a team like Real Madrid, which is the best in the world, you usually mark individual goals and collective goals. I think that Mbappe's individual goals are more than met," Morientes told The Mirror U.S. Sport. "He's been the team's top scorer, and probably also the league's top scorer.
"But he hasn't met the collective goals - and that makes people see him in a different way. People want him to score goals and win titles, and that's what's been missing. But I think he's a spectacular player. In the future, the club has to give him much more performance."
Morientes expressed his disappointment at Mbappe's injury-enforced absence from the trip to Barcelona, given the magnitude of the game: "It's the most important game you can play at club level. Everyone is looking forward to this game. It's not just any game."

The defeat to Barcelona and the surrendering of the title rounds off a grueling week and, ultimately, a turbulent season for Real Madrid. The club was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by FC Bayern Munich and fell short in domestic competitions, including a loss to rivals Barcelona in the Supercopa de España.
It has been a disappointing season by Los Blancos' high standards, which ultimately culminated in Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni allegedly coming to blows, leaving the Uruguayan with a head injury that ruled him out of the Barcelona defeat. Morientes is optimistic that a new manager can stabilize the squad and help Madrid capture silverware in 2026-27.
"Real Madrid's season has been very irregular," Morientes said. "A team that looks to win La Liga, Champions League, and Copa has not been good in any of the competitions. They didn't make it to the final of those cups, and La Liga has been difficult. The league is where everything is measured throughout the year. Unfortunately, you get to the beginning of May without having to play anything.
"That's the worst aspect for a club like Real Madrid. Now, there are problems - there have been problems this week - and the club needs to resolve these issues. That's what leaders are for. The biggest problem is when these issues reach the media.
"But now that the team is not playing for anything at the beginning of May, all the tension built up over the season can be transferred to training. That's what Real Madrid has to deal with and make sure these disputes do not get leaked."
