Fernando Tatis Jr. has not hit a home run this season, raising questions about his performance. Despite this, the San Diego Padres remain in first place in the division.
When will the national emergency be over? Entering play on May 14th, Fernando Tatis has as many home runs as I do. And for that matter, you have as many home runs as Tatis as well. Asking what the heck is going on here is a very valid question. The San Diego Padres are in first place, albeit by half a game, over the Los Angeles Dodgers despite the fact that Tatis has yet to go deep this season. That’s coming from a player who, in his worst 162-game MLB season (excluding 2020), had 21 home runs in 102 games.

Through 41 games, the best thing we can say about Tatis is that he’s running. And that he’s playing second base. Tatis has 10 stolen bases, 15 RBI, and 15 runs scored while batting .252.
Otherwise, we are left scratching our heads. Tatis’ ISO really can’t be much lower at .046, and his 2.3 degree average launch angle follows the same path. From an approach standpoint, his strikeouts are in line, and he’s walking 10.3% of the time, so along with his .276 xBA, things are in order there.
The same can be said for Tatis’ 11.4% barrel rate and 57% hard hit rate. But then, where is the power? A slugging percentage of just .298 is embarrassing, and while his .405 xSLG points to upside, it’s still well below his career marks.
Perhaps a change of scenery is what Tatis needs in what could be a franchise-defining reset for two teams. The second team that stands to benefit from acquiring Tatis would be the .

At this point, Tatis has shown his versatility across the infield and outfield. Both Jazz Chisholm and Trent Grisham are free agents after the season, Giancarlo Stanton is on the Injured List and can’t be counted on, and Aaron Judge can’t sustain his workload in the outfield.
Finding regular playing time for both Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones is challenging, and the Yankees also have young pitching depth to deal from. A Judge and Tatis partnership would benefit both superstars while giving the Padres a chance to retool.
And maybe we’ll see Tatis hit a home run.
