Florida baseball defeated Auburn 6-3 in the series opener. Aidan King pitched six strong innings, allowing only one run, while Blake Cyr hit a pivotal three-run home run.
Florida baseball opened its weekend series against the Auburn Tigers with a 6-3 win on Thursday night.
Aidan King continued his reign of dominance over the SEC, holding Auburn to one run on three hits and two walks over six innings. All three of those hits came in the first inning as King found his footing. After giving up the run, King retired 10 straight batters.
Karson Bowen answered Auburn's run in the first inning for Florida. He doubled down the left field line to bring in Brendan Lawson.
Blake Cyr broke the game open in the third with a 397-foot, three-run home run that came off the bat at 108 mph. Kyle Jones brought in a pair of insurance runs in the fifth with a double to right field. Cade Kurland (walk) and Landon Stripling (single) both scored off Jones' bat.
Ricky Reeth took over for King in the seventh, but he couldn't finish the inning. After Auburn got to Reeth for a double and a pair of singles — one of them scored a run — Ernest Lugo-Canchola got the call. Lugo-Canchola gave up an RBI single to the first batter he faced, but it was smooth sailing from there. He retired the next four batters in a row before turning things over to Joshua Whritenour for the save.
Whritenour came out throwing an easy 97 mph and worked around a one-out single to secure the win. It's the redshirt freshman's seventh save of the year.
Ethan Surowiec was the only Gator with multiple hits in the game. He scored off Jones' double in the fifth. Every Florida starter but Cole Stanford recorded a base hit.
Florida moves to 28-11 on the season and 10-6 in conference play, putting the Gators one game behind Georgia for the conference lead. Texas and Texas A&M are both 9-5 thanks to a canceled game between the two.
Liam Peterson takes the mound for Florida on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET at Condron Family Ballpark.
