Magic host Hornets in a must-win play-in tournament game!
Florida's Micah Mays Jr. shined in the Orange and Blue Game, catching two touchdown passes for a total of 122 yards. The game ended in a 45-45 tie, showcasing strong performances from both the offense and defense.
The Gator Nation got its first glimpse at a new era of college football at Florida on Saturday during the program's annual Orange and Blue Game. The intrasquad scrimmage ended in a 45-45 tie and both the offense and defense provided plenty of highlight plays.
One of the players who made their mark on the scoreboard was redshirt junior wide receiver Michael Mays Jr., who caught not one but two touchdowns of 75 and 23 yards from both Tramell Jones Jr. and Aaron Philo, respectively. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacons transfer hauled in all four passes thrown at him for a total of 122 yards, the latter of which led the receiver corps on Saturday.
Following the game, Mays Jr. spoke with the media about his and the team's performance in the Swamp. Here is what he had to offer.
"It was a great feeling. Just want to be really explosive, really electric out there. It was a great ball by Tramell (Jones Jr.), great ball by Aaron (Philo), and I just want to keep going and continuing into the fall."
"It was a great ball with Tramell. It was a sling and go. We put it up in the air. I just had to go make that play."
"We got a lot of depth in the room, and it's great. We run a lot of different play formations and like put (Vernell Brown III) outside, put him in a slide. Dallas (Wilson)... we can all play anywhere and are very versatile, so it's going to be very exciting this fall season."
"It was great to see him out there in the Swamp doing that. He does it all the time in practice. So it was no shocker, but it was just great seeing him make a routine play like that."
"Yeah, it was kind of like a switch route, and right of coverage, broke in. He put a right over to safety, so it was a good ball by him. He put a right over to safety, and I had to make that play."
"It's a two-minute drive, so you know, we have to go down and score, produce a field goal, score, put points on the board pretty much. So getting that touchdown kind of built momentum for the second half."
"Probably the second one. They're all saying, 'Two touchdowns?' So, yeah, probably the second one. It was great."
"Real excited. Yeah, mom, dad, cousin, a lot of family out there, so ready to go hang out with them afterwards."
"Yeah, so a lot of freshmen came in, a lot of transfers came in — the team that was originally here, we all bonded together this spring. And you know, you've seen what we showcased in the spring game. So the team can build on that momentum into the summer.
"So it's just really exciting just to see it — let's make plays out there. You see the defense making plays. It was 45 for defense and 45 for us. So it just kind of goes to show."
"Yeah, great, great tradition, great legacy, and we just want to build on what they built here and carry that tradition. And we're going to work all summer and work all fall for that.
"Hey, sir, appreciate y'all."
