The Philadelphia Flyers have a 3-2 series lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins. They got out to a dominating 3-0 lead before dropping the last two games. That left the door wide open for the Penguins, who now hold the momentum of the series.
Part of it was the switch from Stuart Skinner to Arturs Silovs in goal, who the Flyers cannot quite solve. Other reasons include the Flyersâ lack of an answer to the Penguinsâ increase of physicality, domination on the boards, and, well, lucky goals.
After winning Game 4 in Philadelphia, the Penguins did not force the series back home to let the Flyers win in Pittsburgh. They did it to keep their season alive. Now, the Penguins have the chance to force the series to 7 games.
Only 4 teams in NHL history have come back following a 0-3 series deficit. The Flyers do not want to end up on the wrong side of the 5th time in NHL history. If the series ends up back in Pittsburgh for Game 7, the Flyers would be the massive underdog.
That is why the Flyers have to treat Wednesdayâs Game 6 like itâs a Game 7. This is their last chance to end the series at home in front of their own fans. If they let the series go even further, the Flyers are faced with the challenge of a Game 7 on the road against a team that has won 3 straight games.
Itâs not impossible, but it certainly becomes a challenge. Just like the Penguins did not win Game 4 just to lose Game 5, they will not win Game 6 just to let the Flyers win Game 7 in Pittsburgh.
Itâs now or never time for the Flyers, and they have to treat Game 6 like it is Game 7.
