Noah Cates of the Philadelphia Flyers is ruled out for the NHL playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes due to a lower-body injury. He sustained the injury while blocking a shot in Game 2 and was seen leaving the arena in a walking boot.
The Philadelphia Flyers suffered a significant blow on Wednesday after forward Noah Cates was officially ruled out for the remainder of the NHL second-round playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Cates was injured late in the first period on Monday after blocking a shot from Carolina defenseman KâAndre Miller. The puck appeared to strike the inside of his right ankle. Despite clearly struggling afterward, Cates finished the game and logged more than 20 minutes in Philadelphiaâs 3-2 overtime loss.
After the game, Cates was seen sitting on an equipment box before leaving the arena in a walking boot while using a knee scooter.

The Flyers announced the update on X after Cates missed practice earlier in the day. Head coach Rick Tocchet has confirmed the injury is a lower-body issue sustained during Game 2.
The timing could hardly be worse for Philadelphia, which already trails the series 0-2 heading into Game 3 at home.
Cates has quietly become one of Philadelphiaâs most reliable two-way players. His regular-season production jumped to career highs with 18 goals and 47 points, but his value extends far beyond offense.
Tocchet consistently used him in difficult defensive matchups, especially against top forward lines. He also played a major role on the penalty kill, leading Flyers forwards in shorthanded ice time during the regular season.
That responsibility now shifts heavily onto veteran Sean Couturier, who already carries difficult defensive assignments against Carolinaâs aggressive forecheck and speed through the neutral zone.

Philadelphiaâs center depth is also becoming a growing concern. Christian Dvorak and Owen Tippett are both managing injuries, leaving the Flyers thin down the middle against one of the NHLâs deepest teams.
The Hurricanes entered the series as the Eastern Conferenceâs top seed for a reason. Carolina rolls four lines, pressures relentlessly, and forces opponents into extended defensive-zone shifts.
Without Cates, Philadelphia loses one of the few forwards capable of slowing that style consistently.

The Flyers competed far better in Game 2 after a flat Game 1 performance. They built an early 2-0 lead and looked more comfortable attacking off the rush. But the loss also exposed how thin the margin is against Carolina. Once the Hurricanes established sustained pressure, Philadelphia struggled to regain control.
Trevor Zegras or Dvorak could take Catesâ spot alongside Matvei Michkov and Alex Bump, but neither player offers the same defensive reliability.
For a young Flyers team that already faces a steep climb in the series, losing Cates removes one of the lineupâs most stabilizing pieces at the worst possible moment.
