Giolito will start out with Single-A Lake Elsinore, as his last MLB start was on Sept. 23 with the Boston Red Sox. Per Giolito’s contract, the Padres will have to add him to their MLB roster 25 days from now, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

He started his 2023 campaign with the White Sox, which was the organization he had spent six of his first seven MLB seasons. Chicago traded Giolito along with right-hander Reynaldo López to the Angels at the trade deadline for catcher Edgar Quero and left-hander .

Giolito did not stay with the Angels very long. He made six starts where he posted a 6.89 ERA and 34 strikeouts across 32.2 innings before Los Angeles placed him on waivers in late August 2023.

The Guardians claimed Giolito off waivers on Aug. 31. Giolito finished his 2023 season with Cleveland, accruing a 7.04 ERA and 39 strikeouts in six starts.
Giolito signed with the Boston Red Sox in free agency in 2024. He missed the entire 2024 season recovering from surgery on his right elbow ulnar collateral ligament. Then, Giolito suffered a hamstring strain in March 2025, which delayed his return to the mound but he eventually made his Red Sox debut on April 30.
Once he returned from back-to-back injuries, Giolito posted a 3.41 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 26 starts. The last time he posted a 3.41 ERA was when he was a 2019 American League All-Star. But his strikeout count was the lowest he has recorded in seasons where he has made at least 13 starts.
His free agency lasted longer than expected but now Giolito will build back up in Single-A before joining the Padres in the next few weeks.
