Former Birmingham City winger yet to decide on extended stay with KV Mechelen
HNB are reporting that Kerim Mrabti has been offered a new deal at KV Mechelen. The former Birmingham City winger has turned himself into a central midfielder since joining the club and the 31-year-old has been offered a one year deal, with the option for this to be extended further. However, Mrabti has not made a decision yet and the paper is reporting that he is willing to wait a bit longer before committing to a new deal.
Mrabti, who played as a winger and sometimes a striker in his younger days, had his breakout in senior football while playing for Upsala based Sirius. In two seasons with the side he scored eight goals in 55 games and earned a move south to the capital Stockholm with Djurgarden. There he played for three seasons, scoring 22 goals in 93 games. In the winter of 2019 he joined Birmingham City on a free transfer, but the move did not go as well as either side expected. Mrabti only spent a year and a half with Birmingham City, playing 29 games and scoring three goals.
In June 2020 he left Birmingham City for KV Mechelen, where he has had a number of successful seasons. His best for KV Mechelen came during the 2021/2022 season where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 39 games. So far this season, Mrabti has sat somewhat deeper than usual, but has still chipped in with five goals and two assists in 26 games.
KV Mechelen are currently trying to earn a European ticket via the Belgian Pro League play-offs. They are currently bottom of the table and need to finish fourth to have any chance of earning a ticket. Fifth may be enough depending on who wins the Belgian cup final, which is between Union St Gilloise and Anderlecht.
