Mark Stroud, a veteran football coach, concluded his 33-year coaching career with a record of 273-111, including 11 region titles and a state finals appearance in 2013. He emphasizes the importance of relationships built with players over his impressive win record.
Mark Stroud is a football lifer. He developed his passion for the game in his playing days at Swainsboro High and passed it on to a generation of players in a remarkable career of more than three decades as a head coach.
Known for his attention to detail and ability to connect with his players and fellow coaches, Stroud had an incredible run as a head coach and racked up the victories in 33 years of memorable seasons.
Stroud posted a career record of 273-111. His head coaching career included one year at his alma mater, with 16 seasons at Toombs County and 16 years at Calvary Day, where his run came to an end at the end of the 2024 season.
He won 11 region titles and led Calvary Day to the Class A state finals in 2013. His 273 career wins rank 20th all time in Georgia, but those victories were just the result of the process, which is where Stroud found his biggest reward as a coach.
"I have a lot of great memories of the big games and the win, but the most important thing to me are the relationships I made with our players," said Stroud, 61, who continues to work at Calvary Day as an athletic director. "The best part is when you have players come back to see you and you realize that you were able to have an impact on their lives ― being able to make a difference in their lives is what matters the most."
Stroud will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Coastal Empire Sports Awards show, presented by Chatham Orthopaedic Associates, set for June 5th on at the Savannah Convention Center.
As the game changed, Stroud said his role almost became more of a CEO of the program, but Stroud's never lost his love for getting down in the dirt and coaching his players one-on-one.
"I always loved the day-in and day-out grind, and teaching the players the little things with the discipline that will make a team successful," Stroud said. "When you're working with a player every day and see the improvements he makes during the season ― that's where you see the influence you can have as a coach, and that was my favorite part of coaching."

Family has always come first for Stroud, who met his wife Pam in their days at Swainsboro High. They have two sons ― Seth and Luke, and a daughter, Markie. Mark and Pam now have five grandsons, ranging in age from 10 to six months.
"Coaching my sons had never crossed my mind, but it was a great experience," Stroud said. "We never talked about it, and I tried to treat them like I would treat any other player."
But now, Stroud is able to look back with pride at the memories and big games he got to share with his boys.
Stroud tried to create a family feeling within his program as he became a second father figure to many ― having an influence and impact that extended beyond the football field.

Dom DeMasi was the starting quarterback for Stroud and an stellar three-sport athlete in his career at Calvary Day. He became the first two-time winner of the Ashley Dearing Award as Savannah's most versatile male high school athlete in his senior year of 2011.
DeMasi and his Calvary Day family suffered a huge loss recently when his former teammate and close friend Dominque Henfield died in a car accident.
Stroud spoke at Henfield's memorial service and delivered a meaningful message, DeMasi said.
"Seeing Coach Stroud up there remembering Dominique meant a lot to us," DeMasi said. "As a former player, sometimes you don't realize the impact a coach like Coach Stroud has on your life. He was a leader, on and off the field and he's someone who cares about his players and makes a difference in their lives as a Christian man.
"As a coach, he was intense and stressed discipline," DeMasi said. "He knew how to get the best from his players. He taught us to put 'self' aside and become selfless — playing for the team. We knew everything he did came from a place of love and we all respected Coach Stroud."
Stroud said losing Henfield, a star linebacker who went on to play at Shorter University, hit him and the Calvary community hard.
"Dominique was a catalyst who helped turn around the program at Calvary Day," Stroud said. "He was a great player and a great person who will be greatly missed."
After sitting out a season of football, Stroud said he is hoping to get back on the sideline in an assistant coaching role, possibly working with the offensive line.
"I'd like to get back and work with the players one-on-one," Stroud said. "That's what I've missed the most."
Stroud stressed that his wife, Pam, has been the foundation of his coaching career, and his life.
"She has been all in from the start," Stroud said. "I was lucky enough to marry the perfect wife. She supports me in everything I do. If we had a big game coming up the next week, and I came back from a practice a little early — she would joke with me asking if we were ready for Friday night. Pam has been beside me and our kids for the entire journey and I wouldn't be where I am today without her."
