Former Florida State guard Martin Somerville has committed to the West Virginia Mountaineers, per On3's Joe Tipton. He departed Tallahassee after one season with the Seminoles and landed in the Big 12 as head coach Darian DeVries continues to reshape his roster.
Somerville, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard from Bowie, Maryland, appeared in 33 games for Florida State in 2025-26, averaging 8.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 33.6 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from three. The numbers represented a step back from his freshman campaign at UMass Lowell, where he averaged 13.6 points and 2.9 rebounds en route to being named America East Rookie of the Year after earning a conference-record 11 Rookie of the Week honors across 32 appearances.
Somerville originally chose Florida State over BYU in April 2025 following a visit to Tallahassee, with FSU head coach Luke Loucks identifying him as a backcourt piece capable of providing perimeter shooting and playmaking in his first year leading the program.
As a prep standout at Southern California Academy, Somerville was named to the Overtime Elite program as a senior and averaged 14 points and five assists per game, a skillset that drew interest from high-major programs before he initially signed with UMass Lowell.
The departure is not unexpected, given the volume of backcourt additions Loucks secured this offseason. The arrivals of Anthony Robinson II and Kameron Taylor, combined with a freshman class that includes Martay Barnes and Brandon Bass Jr., effectively closed off the path to consistent minutes for Somerville heading into 2026-27.
For Florida State, the roster picture remains largely intact. With Robinson II, Taylor, Barnes, Bass Jr., and Jasen Lopez all in the fold at the guard and wing spots, Loucks retains more than enough backcourt depth to absorb the departure and move forward with one of the most talented rosters of his tenure heading into Year 2.
