Former Liverpool star suggests Slotâs time is up
There is a heaviness around Liverpool right now that has not been felt for years. The noise from the stands, the uncertainty around performances and the questions over direction have combined to create an atmosphere that feels increasingly unstable for Arne Slot.
Only a season ago, Slot was being celebrated after guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first campaign. Now the mood has shifted dramatically. Supporters who once embraced his calm authority and tactical intelligence are beginning to wonder whether the project is already drifting off course.
BBC Sportâs Phil McNulty highlighted the growing unrest around Anfield following Liverpoolâs frustrating 1-1 draw against Chelsea, describing the atmosphere as âtoxicity rarely heard at Anfieldâ. It is a remarkable turnaround given the optimism that surrounded Slot after replacing Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpoolâs owners, Fenway Sports Group, are now facing a difficult choice. Do they continue backing Slot after investing heavily in the squad, or do they move quickly before the situation deteriorates further?
The comparison with Brendan Rodgers in 2015 is impossible to ignore. Rodgers had come close to delivering the title the previous year but lost the backing of the fanbase after a poor campaign. Liverpool stuck with him briefly before eventually appointing Klopp. That decision transformed the clubâs modern history.
Now another pivotal moment may be approaching.
There is growing pressure on Arne Slot due to poor team performances and uncertainty about the club's direction.
A former Liverpool star has suggested that Arne Slot's time as manager may be coming to an end.

The name dominating discussion among Liverpool supporters is Xabi Alonso. The former midfielder remains hugely admired on Merseyside and his managerial reputation continues to grow despite a difficult spell at Real Madrid.
Alonsoâs Bundesliga success with Bayer Leverkusen elevated him into Europeâs elite managerial bracket. His connection with Liverpool naturally makes him an attractive option should Fenway Sports Group decide to make a change.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes the pressure on Slot may already be irreversible. Speaking to BBC Sport, Murphy said:
âSlot has won a title, which Brendan didnât do, so on the surface it would make more sense to stick with him, and I do feel strongly it is unfair to say he only won the title with Kloppâs team. Thatâs just not right.
âThe problem Slot has got, especially at one of the biggest clubs in the world, is that when the fanbase turns, you are really, really struggling to get them back unless you win every game, then not just win, but win in a style Liverpool fans expect and demand.
âThis season you have seen Liverpool being dictated to by the way other teams play at Anfield. Fair enough, itâs different away from Anfield, but at home you expect Liverpool to be going after you, not giving you time to breathe. Too often itâs not been like that.â
Murphyâs comments reflect a growing belief that Liverpoolâs identity has faded this season. Under Klopp, Anfield was relentless. Opponents suffocated beneath waves of pressure and intensity. Under Slot, Liverpool have often appeared reactive instead of dominant.
That perception matters enormously at a club where style carries almost as much importance as results.
Liverpoolâs hierarchy must now decide whether patience is the smarter path or whether decisive action is required before rivals surge ahead.
Murphy believes delaying the inevitable could create even bigger problems. He warned that persisting with Slot carries major risks if results do not improve quickly next season.
âI just donât see a situation, irrelevant of transfer ins and outs and there are going to be a lot in the summer, where the fans get back to being 100% behind Slot,â Murphy added.
âFor that to happen he will have to go on a run like he did in the first season, where he basically won every game. He then has to play in a certain way that Liverpool fans expect.
âI think Slotâs time is probably up. The main reason for saying this is not a dislike of him. I think heâs a good guy and a very bright coach, but the reality is Liverpoolâs fanbase is as powerful as any out there.â
Those are strong words from a former player who understands the emotional landscape of Liverpool better than most. The connection between supporters and manager has always been crucial at Anfield. Once fractured, it is notoriously difficult to repair.
Liverpool have also invested heavily in recent transfer windows, meaning expectations have risen sharply. Fans are not prepared to accept decline after tasting success so recently.
There is still no indication that Liverpool are preparing to dismiss Slot immediately, but football changes quickly when momentum disappears. Every poor performance adds more pressure. Every flat display increases the volume around Alonso.
For Liverpool supporters, Alonso represents familiarity, ambition and emotional connection. Whether that is enough to convince Fenway Sports Group remains uncertain, but his availability inevitably changes the conversation.
Slot still has time to recover the situation, yet the margin for error is narrowing rapidly. Liverpool are one of footballâs most demanding institutions. Winning alone is rarely enough. The manner of victory matters just as much.
That truth defined the Klopp era. It also explains why Slot now finds himself under the microscope despite delivering silverware so recently.
