Malick Kordel has found a new landing spot in the Big Ten with another former Wolverine.
Kordel, a 7-foot-2 center from Germany, announced in an Instagram post on Friday that he’s transferring to Minnesota, where he’ll rejoin forces with wing Winters Grady.
Kordel’s commitment to the Golden Gophers came hours after Grady, who was the first to declare his transfer destination, and a week after he entered the transfer portal. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
A raw prospect who grew up playing handball and didn’t start playing basketball competitively until 2021, Kordel appeared in 14 games off the bench and averaged 1.2 points and 1.5 rebounds in 4.1 minutes as a freshman.
Given the talent in Michigan’s frontcourt and the fact that the Wolverines had three players — Yaxel Lendeborg, Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara — who could play at center depending on the lineup, Kordel only saw the floor late in games with other scout team members.
At Minnesota, Kordel will look to crack the rotation and play a larger role for coach Niko Medved. In Medved’s first season, the Golden Gophers went 15-18 overall and finished 11th in the 18-team Big Ten at 8-12.
