The Miami Marlins are coming into the third week of April during the MLB season with a solid 8-8 record. While things could be a bit better, especially after their sweep at the hands of the Detroit Tigers, the Marlins are still in good shape.
But, how good are the Marlins actually? Is this just a fluky hot start for a Miami team that has some fun young talent, or is this for real? Are the Marlins actually contenders?
Well, former MLB general manager Jim Bowden for The Athletic made a bold claim that this Marlins team is indeed for real, and that they are contenders for the postseason and here to stay as well.
"It was a tough weekend for the Marlins, who were swept by the Tigers, but even with that setback, Miami looks like a team on the rise," Bowden writes. "... They are contenders and are here to stay."
Miami is 8-8 to begin the 2026 season, and looking back to the 2025 season, across their final 76 games, they went 41-35.
While the Marlins aren't a top-tier contender by any means, they are a frisky team that certainly has the makings of an underdog postseason team.
Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez are two elite starting pitchers, and could help lead the Marlins' pitching staff during a postseason series. Add in Max Meyer and Pete Fairbanks, and the Marlins have a great core of a pitching staff.

Then, with the lineup, Augustin Ramirez, Liam Hicks, Xavier Edwards, Otto Lopez, and Owen Caissie have looked good this season.
Kyle Stowers has yet to play this year, and his return would make Miami even better. And any other call-ups or players breaking out, and this roster could be a serious threat come October.
It's not just that the Marlins have looked competitive this season; it's that their roster is full of young players who might only be getting better.
The Marlins are a fun team in Major League Baseball, and Bowden believes that this is a legitimate contender for the postseason this season and beyond.
