Alex Cora knows what it takes to win a championship. He did it as a player with the Boston Red Sox in 2007, as a bench coach with the Houston Astros in 2017 and as the manager of the Red Sox in 2018. It's why he pushed for Boston to acquire championship-caliber players like Alex Bregman.
However, the Red Sox have their own way of doing things with an analytical, data-driven approach. They value models, numbers and projections more than intangibles, team chemistry and the human element.
Accordingly, former MLB GM Jim Bowden believes Boston's front office clashed with Cora on this front and didn't appreciate his insight enough.
"He knows what it takes to put a World Series team on the field. And his input wasn't heard, nor was it respected, and so someone had to go," Bowden said on Thursday's episode of "Foul Territory."
The former MLB GM believes Cora's championship experience and push for top talent were not adequately valued by the Red Sox.

Last time, it was Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom who got fired while Cora remained. This time, Craig Breslow kept his job while Cora lost his.
Bowden believes firing Cora so early in the season was both an overreaction and a mistake.
"That firing made absolutely no sense... In my opinion, when you have a manager at the level of Alex Cora, that is not a manager you fire," Bowden added. "You figure out everything around him. He is special... There'll be a lot of teams that are coming after Alex."
Unfortunately, the Red Sox weren't able to figure things out with Cora, just like they weren't able to figure things out with Bregman, Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts and Jon Lester. They no longer have one of the best managers in the sport as they try to navigate the rest of the 2026 season and overcome their historically bad start.
