The NBA Play-In Tournament is underway and the NBA Playoffs start this weekend, marking the start of another postseason journey for the Boston Celtics.
The Celtics are in good shape as they prepare to chase their second title in three years. Jayson Tatum's back, they finished the season on fire, and they're favored to win a relatively weak Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, the Western Conference is shaping up to be a slugfest between the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs, all of whom are legitimate title contenders.
Only one of them can make the NBA Finals, however, and they'll likely wear each other out in the Western Conference Finals before they get there, giving Boston a key advantage.
"If you think that you are going to go and battle seven games against Denver and Jokic, which Jokic is going to beat Wemby up. To then go and play the defending champs and then have enough for the championship? Usually thatâs how East Coast teams win is the West Coast beats each other up and then itâs easier for them," former NBA superstar Gilbert Arenas explained on "Gil's Arena" this week.
"So, thatâs really how you flip-flop. So, this looks like depending on who gets there, Boston could possibly win this out."
Arenas is right that the Celtics have an easier path to the Finals than any team in the West. Accordingly, they may be better rested and have more time to prepare, which could give them an edge over their Western Conference foes if they reach the Finals for the third time in five years.
