Markus Burton, former Notre Dame guard, has officially transferred to the Indiana Hoosiers. He previously made a significant impact at Notre Dame, earning ACC Rookie of the Year honors.
Turns out fans and family of Markus Burton won't have to travel very far to watch him finish his career.
Markus Burton, the former Notre Dame standout, has previously committed to transfer to the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hoosiers confirmed on Monday that they did add the highly-regarded in-state guard to in their attempts to turn the program around after a disappointing season where they missed the NCAA tournament.
Burton, a point guard out of Penn High School in Mishawaka, had originally signed with Notre Dame as part of the 2023 recruiting class after earning statewide recognition as Mr. Basketball in the state of Indiana. For Notre Dame, landing a local star with that resume was an early win for head coach Micah Shrewsberry's program. Being able to keep a local star and one of Indiana's best player's was considered a positive sign of things to come.
He had an immediate impact in South Bend. In his freshman season, Burton averaged 17.5 points per game which earned him ACC Rookie of the Year honors as well as third-team All-ACC. He set a Notre Dame record for scoring average for a freshman and was one of the leading scorers in the country for first-year players.
Now Burton is officially headed to Bloomington, where Indiana views him as a potential starting point guard. The move undoubtedly adds another layer to the in-state rivalry between the two struggling programs.
For Notre Dame, there is certainly a sense of tension amongst the fanbase as Burton is just one of several contributors from last year's basketball team to have left the program this offseason.
