Former Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo is now a free agent.
Verdugo signed a minor-league deal with the San Diego Padres in March, but he never appeared in a game for the team due to injuries. Now, on Tuesday, Padres reporter Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Verdugo has been released as he’s set to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.
“Outfielder Alex Verdugo has a shoulder injury that is expected to keep him out the rest of the season and require surgery,” Ace wrote on X. “He has been released by the Padres. After signing a minor-league deal in March, he did not appear in any games for any affiliate.”
This marks the second-straight season that Verdugo has been released, as the Atlanta Braves released him in July last year after he appeared in 56 games for the team.
Boston acquired Verdugo from the Los Angeles Dodgers in February of 2020, along with and , for , , and cash considerations.

Verdugo played four seasons with the Red Sox, appearing in 493 games and having an 8.1 WAR in those four years, according to Baseball Reference. In his Red Sox tenure, Vertigo hit .281 with 43 home runs and 206 RBIs.
After four years in Boston, the Red Sox traded Verudgo to the New York Yankees for Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert, and Nicholas Judice.
Fitts was used in the trade to acquire Sonny Gray, while Weissert is in the Red Sox’s bullpen, so Verdugo is still helping Boston in 2026.
