Former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer opposes the proposed expansion of the College Football Playoff (CFP) to 24 teams, advocating instead for a 16-team format. He believes expanding to 24 would dilute the competition by allowing nearly all top teams to participate.

The hot topic surrounding college sports is postseason expansion, but former Tennessee football head coach Phillip Fulmer doesn't want to hear about it in his sport.
USA TODAY's Knoxville News Sentinel caught up with the former Volunteers coach before his annual golf classic, and it's fair to say Fulmer is opposed to any change involving the CFP.
“I don’t know what they’re going to do. (SEC) commissioner (Greg) Sankey is pretty dead set on sticking with 16 teams (in an anticipated expansion). I think that's a good number," Fulmer said.
Fulmer continued, "But if you go to 24, you might as well let everybody in because you’re almost taking the whole top 25. I wouldn’t like that.”
However, Fulmer did not say that he wasn't opposed to all changes in college football, just this particular one.
“I wasn’t for any type of playoff back in the day,” Fulmer said. “But after seeing it play out, I think it’s a really great thing. So any playoff benefits a team that loses early in the season but gets better and better.”
In 17 seasons with Tennessee, Fulmer went 152-52.
