Formula 2 competed in America for the first time in its history at the Miami Grand Prixāand its boss says he would love for the championship to grow its presence across the country.
Formula 2 rearranged its scheduled at short notice in the wake of the cancelation of rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, instead competing in Miami last weekend, while it will also debut in Montreal later this month.
Formula 2 delivered a pair of scintillating races in Miami, with both the Sprint Race and rain-hit Feature Race involving final lap three-way fights for the victory.
āI had been talking to Montreal a bit earlier about the future, not ā26, and Montreal had asked me if we would come for ā26 and I said no weāve sorted our calendar weāre not going to change it,ā Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel said at the Miami Grand Prix.
āSince we were trying to optimize all the costs of coming to North America, it made complete sense to discuss with Miami as well to be able to have all the freight go to America and then go from Miami to Montreal by truck.
āIt was quite a simple thing to think about, but to organize was much more complicated!ā
Formula 2āand its predecessor GP2 Seriesāhas typically competed alongside Formula 1 grands prix in Europe and the Middle East, though expanded to include Australia from 2023.

Michel has long been keen to limit the costs for drivers competing in Formula 2, as well as its own feeder series Formula 3, owing to the need for any youngsters to bring a sizable budget to their respective teams.
He emphasized that he ādoes not want to goā much above Formula 2ās current roster of 14 events āelse our costs are going to go completely crazy.ā

When asked whether Miamiāand Montrealācould become permanent fixtures on Formula 2ās calendar, Michel said: āWe are discussing. Letās say that itās [with] Montreal we really are discussing, Miami is a bit more complicated for one simple reason that Miami already has good support races, and thatās why it was not easy, and honestly in terms of logistics itās complicated.
āBut, yes, thereās a possibility, we havenāt started discussions for the future as the situation was to make it happen now.
āWeād love to come back, weād love to have F2 in America anyway, and Iām sure there will be other opportunities because Formula 1 is racing also in Austin and Las Vegas, and so there are a lot of possibilities.
āWe had never been in North America before, itās important for F2 to be there and seen, and for American drivers to be willing to come to F2, like Sebastian [Montoya] and Colton [Herta] are doing to try and reach F1 after that, yes for the whole F1 groupānot only F2āitās important to have F2 coming and race in North America.ā
