Saints fans are united in their anticipation for the NFL Draft, urging the team to 'Don’t Mess This Up.' With eight picks and a deep draft class, expectations are high for the team's future.
There are few things in the world that a group of people can have a consensus opinion on. As we stand here on the eve of the NFL Draft and debate who the New Orleans Saints should select at No. 8, there are four words that every member of the Who Dat Nation can agree on to summarize this draft: Don’t Mess This Up.
The Saints are in a position where they have plenty of needs across multiple positions, and this is a perfect storm of an offseason. It’s one where they actually had available cap space in free agency and were able to land high-level acquisitions at key positions of need, which is why faith in the organization is high. But the depth of the roster is still lacking, and the best way to replenish that is through the draft.
This year’s draft class is full of great value from the first round all the way through the end. Normally, the Saints would enter a draft like this without a first-round pick or with more needs than selections. But this year, once again, it’s a perfect storm. Not only is this draft class deep, but the Saints also have eight picks to work with.
This draft has the potential to be a cornerstone for the new era being established on Airline. The expectations for both this draft and this team are very high. While it will be challenging for the wrong decisions to be made on draft night, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
Rumors of the Saints trading up to the third overall pick have been floating around publicly, and it’s being met with mixed reactions. We’ve seen this organization be aggressive in the past for several reasons, but this year’s draft class, combined with where the Saints are currently picking, feels like a situation where patience will yield the greatest return.
The thought of landing a player like Rueben Bain Jr., or whoever the selection may be, while still holding onto next year’s first-round pick, is a beautiful scenario, one that can only be realized if the Saints remain patient.
Sometimes increased faith can bring increased anxiety, the nerves of not knowing what or how something may turn out. There are many different ways the Saints can approach this draft, but at the end of the day, no matter who they select or how they navigate it, there is one simple request:
Please don’t mess this up.
