Fox Sports identifies Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson as the most overhyped NFL prospects in the upcoming draft. NFL scouts have criticized Simpson, particularly after a comparison suggesting he might outperform Mendoza.
While the argument continues over who is the best quarterback in this year's draft, Fox Sports NFL reporters Eric Williams and Ralph Vacchiano have a list of who they think are the top overhyped and underhyped prospects.
Surprisingly, or in some cases not surprisingly, both Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson made the list.
Both Williams and Vacchiano spoke with NFL scouts and general managers, and they had some interesting insights.
Let’s start with Simpson. Since Dan Orlovsky said he thinks Simpson may be better than Mendoza, the Alabama quarterback has been crucified by several NFL scouts.
Vacchiano spoke with a scout and an assistant general manager about Simpson.
"We’re talking about him as a first-rounder now?" the scout told Vacchiano. "That’s less about him, more about the lack of other quarterbacks. Don’t get me wrong: I like him. Smart kid, good tools, plenty of potential. But he’s small (6-foot-1, 211) and barely played (15 college starts).
"He needs more time. And you can’t draft a developmental prospect in the first round. But I bet somebody will."
Some are already speculating that, besides the Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Jets or the Cleveland Browns may also take a chance on Simpson.
As the assistant general manager pointed out, he is probably going high, or he wouldn’t be attending the draft.
As for Mendoza, some aren’t sold on him either. According to Williams, some scouts are questioning his arm strength.
"His footwork is all over the road because of the RPO (run-pass option) offense," a longtime NFL scout told Williams. "He has adequate deep ball strength, but his accuracy is inconsistent deep. He has good anticipation and zip on timing routes and good accuracy short to intermediate, but he’s not accurate when pressured.”
But despite those warnings on both, they will be high draft picks.
