Fred VanVleet discusses the challenges faced by the Houston Rockets during their injury-plagued 2025-26 season, highlighting the impact of missing key players and lack of practice. He expresses pride in the individual growth of younger teammates despite the team's struggles.
Speaking on his personal podcast (Unguarded), veteran Rockets guard Fred VanVleet is offering important context on Houstonâs recently completed 2025-26 season.
âYouâve got to remember, bro,â VanVleet told Rockets Wireâs Brian Barefield. âFor what we built here in a quick turnaround, we basically took four of our five starters out: me, Dillon (Brooks), Jalen (Green), Steven (Adams). Essentially, right?â
âThen adding KD (Kevin Durant), itâs a whole new team,â VanVleet continued. âWe didnât get one practice together. I got hurt before we started practice, so we never even got to see what it looked like. Thereâs no continuity. Our system changed. Everything changed.â
âIâm just proud of the guys for hanging in there during the season, and also proud of the steps that the young guys made along the way. I feel like each of them individually grew a lot inside of what was ultimately kind of an up-and-down season.â
Green and Brooks were traded to the Phoenix Suns in the Durant deal, while VanVleet and Adams suffered season ending leg injuries in September and January, respectively.
Despite the roster turnover, the 2025-26 Rockets finished with a 52-30 record and a first-round playoff exit, the same as the version with VanVleet, Adams, Brooks, and Green in 2024-25.
With that in mind, VanVleet said that if he had been told those results in September, he wouldn't have been disappointed. His analysis:
The Rockets faced significant challenges due to injuries, missing four of their five starters, which hindered team continuity and practice.
Fred VanVleet provided leadership and context on the team's struggles, emphasizing the individual growth of younger players despite the overall difficulties.
VanVleet noted that the team did not have a single practice together before the season started, which affected their ability to develop chemistry.
Key players missing included Fred VanVleet, Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green, and Steven Adams, all of whom were crucial to the team's performance.

If you told me in September that I would miss the whole season, Steven would miss 75% of the season, and we would win 52 games and play the (Los Angeles) Lakers in a four-five matchup, take them to six without KD, I would probably say, âOkay, that doesnât sound crazy to me.â And itâs not a failure. I wouldnât feel bad about that.
Now, while youâre in it, itâs crazy, right? It looks bad some nights. Youâve got the blown leads, youâve got the mishaps, youâve got guysâ performances up and down. So, if youâre riding that roller coaster of emotion, then yeah, youâre going to feel some type of way. I know fans struggle with that sometimes because theyâre just so passionate. They want everything to be perfect all the time.
But all in all, especially now as I get older in the league, you have to be able to take away the positives: KD playing 78 games, Amen (Thompson) taking the growth that he did as a full-time point guard, Reed (Sheppard) making a big jump in his development. We saw a lot of flashes.
Alpi (Alperen Sengun) was up and down, but the way he started and the way he finished, you kind of saw it. And heâs still pretty damn young. Jabari (Smith Jr.), you know how I feel about Jabari, to see his progression. To see Tariâs (Eason) progression in a real role, being a starter sometimes and playing real minutes.
VanVleetâs complete podcast commentary can be viewed below. Now 32 years old, VanVleet is revered around the team and the NBA for his leadership qualities.
The good news for the Rockets is that both VanVleet and Adams are expected to be fully healthy and medically cleared prior to the start of 2026-27 training camp in September.
Should the roster stay fairly similar, Houston is hoping that the return of those two veterans and more continuity â along with lessons learned from an uneven 2025-26 campaign â can take next seasonâs Rockets closer to the top of the Western Conference.
âI think there are just a ton of positives that you can take away,â VanVleet surmised. âWe went through a lot. We tried a lot. We went through adversity. We had to come out of adversity. We had to battle through injury. We saw what worked and what didnât work.â
