On Thursday, Florida State announced that the Seminoles had mutually canceled their upcoming home-and-home with Georgia in 2027 and 2028. FSU said the two schools are actively trying to put a neutral-site game on the calendar instead. Athletic director Michael Alford provided the following statement about the decision.
This decision had been rumored for a while, and it is now official. This is the second high-profile matchup Florida State canceled in the last nine months, as the Noles removed its home game against Notre Dame in 2026 last November. Other ACC/SEC matchups have also been chalked in recent months, including Georgia and Louisville.
âAs we considered the effects of evolving scheduling mandates within both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference, we have mutually agreed that it is in the best interest of both schools to cancel our home-and-home series scheduled for 2027 and 2028.â
âWe are now discussing playing a future neutral-site contest, and we are optimistic we will get that done. Importantly, this change will not reduce the total home games on our schedule moving forward.â
Sources have told Tomahawk Nation that the game is actively being courted by streaming outlets like Netflix, similar to the deal struck by Amazon Prime to broadcast Duke basketball games.
The move doesnât come as a major surprise as, with both the ACC and SEC moving to nine-game conference schedules in the coming years, teams are looking for more âscheduled winsâ rather than playing difficult non-conference matchups. Additionally, neutral-site games can spark bidding wars among venues, sometimes making the venture more lucrative for programs.
The problem for Florida State, however, is that the Noles just finished renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium and were counting on marquee matchups to help generate revenue, which is partially why the Seminoles hosted Alabama in 2025. Now, the home schedule becomes considerably less interesting as the program faces a crossroads.
The cancellation was due to evolving scheduling mandates within the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference.

Florida State also canceled its home game against Notre Dame scheduled for 2026, marking the second high-profile cancellation in nine months.
