Florida State baseball defeated Clemson 8-4, led by a strong performance from the top lineup. Wes Mendes struck out 10 batters, earning his ninth win of the season.
The top half of Florida State baseball's lineup sparked the Seminoles offense, and Wes Mendes twirled a gem in an 8-4 series-opening win over Clemson on Friday, May 8, at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
John Stuetzer, Brayden Dowd, Hunter Carns, and Brody DeLamielleure went a combined 7-for-18 and hit two home runs to help power FSU to the win. They drove in seven of the eight runs scored for the No. 14 Seminoles (35-14, 16-9 ACC).
Stuetzer went 1-for-5, but he blasted a two-run home run. Dowd went 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored. DeLamiellure extended his hit streak to 12-games with a 2-for-4 night with three RBI. Carns went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Mendes started and struck out 10, his fourth appearance this season with double-digit strikeouts, and he allowed three runs on five hits in 101 pitches to earn his ninth win of the season.
Carns opened the scoring with a blop single in the first inning that dropped in the gap between left field and shortstop, which allowed Dowd to score.
After a scoreless second, FSU scored three in the third, with an RBI single from DeLamielleure, the first of three straight FSU at-bats that ended in a run scored. Carns knocked in his second RBI with a single, which also moved DeLamielleure to third base. That earned the Seminoles another run as Nathan Cmeyla hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give FSU a 4-0 lead.
Clemson scored one in the home half of the third, an RBI single from Jacob Jarrell, but a pair of home runs in the next two innings blew the game open. Stuetzer launched a 2-run home run in the fourth inning with two outs, his eighth of the season and sixth in the last month. DeLamielleure led off the fifth inning with a solo blast to deep center to put FSU up 7-2.
Florida State baseball won the game against Clemson with a score of 8-4.
John Stuetzer, Brayden Dowd, Hunter Carns, and Brody DeLamielleure were the standout players, combining for 7 hits and driving in 7 runs.
Wes Mendes recorded 10 strikeouts during the game against Clemson.
After the win against Clemson, Florida State baseball's record improved to 35-14 overall and 16-9 in the ACC.

A sacrifice fly from DeLamiellerue scored Dowd in the top of the ninth. Dowd reached on a walk, and he stole second base, and reached third after the throw ran into right field, which allowed him to come home for the final run.
The Tigers scratched two runs across in the sixth and seventh innings, and despite loading the bases in the ninth inning, Clemson failed to produce another run.
In the ninth with two outs, Abraham allowed a single, which led to a mound visit with pitching coach Micah Posey. During the visit, Abraham told Posey something that led to the athletic trainer coming out to check on Abraham, who left the game with an undiscloused injury.
Brodie Purcell replaced him, threw four balls to walk Jarrell and load the bases, and was replaced by Payton Manca. The lefty got into a 3-1 count before inducing a pop-fly to end the game.
One glance at the Seminoles pregame lineup would have caused the majority of FSU fans to do a double-take, with Ben Barrett listed at first base.
He hasn't played in the field for the program since the 2023 season, and while he is a former two-way prospect, he's spent the last two seasons in the bullpen focusing on pitching. The move was the latest throw of the dice from Jarrett after the season-ending injury to Myles Bailey, which left a gap at first base that's primarily been filled by Eli Putnam.
Barrett went 0-for-4 in his first appearance at the plate in three years, reaching base once on a fielder's choice, and his progress will be something to monitor should Jarrett continue to use him at first base. He hit .359, drove in 21 runs, and left the yard twice while hitting seven doubles as a freshman before making the transition to pitcher after an injury.
