FSU beats out Kentucky for Colorado transfer in major portal win

Colorado forward Sebastian Rancik has committed to the Seminoles, according to On3's Joe Tipton, choosing FSU over several other suitors — most notably Kentucky, where head coach Mark Pope and his staff had been making a significant late push. As recently as Saturday morning, On3's Jamie Shaw reported that Kentucky had momentum in the recruitment and that a decision was imminent, making head coach Luke Loucks' closing ability all the more remarkable.

The commitment adds to what has been a transformative two weeks of roster construction for Loucks. Rancik is the fourth transfer to commit to Florida State this offseason, joining Kameron Taylor (UNC Asheville), Anthony Robinson II (Missouri), and Shon Abaev (Cincinnati) in a portal class that addresses nearly every pressing need heading into the second year of the Loucks era.

Rancik arrives as the most proven frontcourt addition of the cycle. The 6-foot-11 sophomore started 26 of 29 appearances for the Buffaloes this past season, averaging 12.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 28.1 minutes per game while shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 33.1 percent from beyond the arc. As a true freshman in 2024-25, he averaged 5.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per contest before exploding into one of the Big 12's most productive and versatile forwards in his sophomore campaign.

Rancik was the No. 111 overall player and No. 21 power forward in the 2024 recruiting cycle per the Rivals Industry Rankings, and rated as the No. 30 power forward in On3's 2026 Transfer Portal Player Rankings at the time of his commitment. He will have two years of eligibility remaining, giving Loucks a long-term front-court anchor around whom the program can build.

The addition fills the one glaring hole that remained on FSU's roster after a busy portal window. With Rancik now in the fold alongside a top-10 nationally ranked freshman class, the Seminoles enter the 2026-27 season with a revamped, more talented, and deeper roster than the previous season.

Loucks, the 36-year-old second-year head coach, guided Florida State to an 18-15 record and a 10-8 mark in conference play in his debut season — a foundation that this portal class is now built to significantly exceed.
