A'ja Wilson's 45-point game leads Aces to victory over Suns
Florida State defeated Miami 11-1, securing the series win after overcoming an early home run. Trey Beard pitched six strong innings, leading FSU to a decisive victory.
Florida State needed every minute of Thursday’s opener vs. Miami, erasing a five-run deficit to pull off an extra-inning walk-off win.
No such theatrics were needed on Friday as FSU shrugged off an early Hurricanes home run to build up a five-run lead of its own, paving the way to a an 11-1 run-rule victory and a series win to end the regular season.
Lefty Trey Beard got the start and win for Florida State, putting together six innings of work (eight strikeouts, four hits, one run) with 65 strikes on 99 pitches thrown.
Beard began his outing with a full-count strikeout but gave up a home run to the second Miami batter faced and walked the third. He notched back-to-back strikeouts to close out the frame and keep the game at 1-0 in the Hurricanes’ favor.
John Stuetzer struck out looking on a full count to begin the bottom of the first for FSU, with Brayden Dowd walking after, followed by Brody DeLamielleure popped up for the second out of the frame. Hunter Carns very nearly put Florida State up 2-1 on a left center smack but an above-the-wall catch kept the Seminoles off the scoreboard and preserved Miami’s lead.
The top of the second was a quick frame, a nine-pitch showing that saw Beard register a fourth strikeout followed by a lineout and groundout. Ben Barrett struck out looking to begin the bottom of the second, with FSU getting a runner on after Gabe Fraser was struck by a pitch. He took second off a wild pitch, advancing to third off an Eli Putnam single to center field — though Putnam managed to get on second after the outfielder’s throw to home fell short. A Carter McCulley sacrifice fly scored Fraser, leveling up the game with two outs. Cal Fisher hit an RBI right center single to score Putnam, putting Florida State up as the Seminoles returned to the top of the order. Stuetzer got on first due to a throwing error, and then a Dowd single plated a third run, putting runners on the corners. The scoring ended there, though, as DeLamielleure flied out to wrap the second inning with FSU leading 3-1.
Miami began the third with back-to-back groundouts, though it managed to put one on after an infield single before another groundout closed out the frame.
Florida State added on to its lead on the first pitch of the bottom frame as Carns smacked his second home run of the weekend. Barrett was walked to put one on, followed by Fraser getting hit by a pitch once again and Putnam being walked, loading the bases. McCulley infield fly marked the first out of the inning for Florida State, with Fisher striking out looking for the second. Stuetzer was walked on a full count, giving the Seminoles another run and forcing Miami to make a change on the mound, after which Dowd grounded out for the final out of the third.

The top of the fourth saw another three up, three down frame from Miami as Beard picked up his fifth and sixth strikeouts to sandwich a groundout.
DeLamielleure reached on a fielding error, advancing to second after a Carns right field single. Barrett flied out, advancing DeLamielleure to put runners on the corners for Florida State. Fraser reached on a fielder’s choice to score DeLamielleure, with a throwing error allowing Carns to move up. Putnam instead was hit by a pitch this time around, loading the bases for the Seminoles with one out and leading to another Miami change on the mound. McCulley struck out looking and then Fisher ground out to end the inning, Florida State leading 6-1.
Miami flied out to begin the fifth, putting one on off a single to right field. A fielding error by McCulley put runners on the corners for the Hurricanes, but a seventh Beard strikeout and a flyout prevented any damage done to Florida State’s lead.
Stuetzer got his first hit of the game to begin the bottom frame, singling in the infield, but was caught stealing at second. Dowd got walked, followed by DeLamielleure going down swinging and Carns being walked on a full count. Barrett was walked after, loading the bases for Fraser who flied out to left field.
The top of the sixth was a 1-2-3 showing for Miami, who managed to hit a single to start but an eighth strikeout from Beard combined with a fly out and the leadoff hitter caught stealing made it a quick frame.
The Hurricanes made their third change on the mound in the bottom of the sixth. Putnam struck out swinging for the first out, after which McCulley was walked. He stole second in the midst of a 14-pitch at-bat from Fisher, followed by a Stuetzer groundout to end the inning.
Brodie Purcell came in to relieve Beard at the top of the seventh, with the righty logging three straight strikeouts to begin his outing.
Dowd was walked to begin the bottom frame, with DeLamielleure flying out after. Dowd advanced to second on a balk during Carns’ at-bat but was left stranded after a Barrett right field fly out fell just short of a home run.
The top of the eighth began with another Purcell strikeout, though Miami put a runner on first after a 3-1 walk. A right side single put another on before a foul territory putout earned the second out and a fifth strikeout from Purcell closed out the frame.
Miami once again made a pitching change in the bottom of the eighth, with Fraser getting a full-count single but getting tagged out trying to reach second. Putnam and McCulley were both walked, then both advanced into scoring position off a wild pitch. Fisher then padded Florida State’s lead with a 2RBI single, shortly joined on base by Stuetzer after a walk. A sixth pitcher entered the game for Miami with two on and one out, off whom Dowd got a left side single to load the bases for DeLamielleure. He kept his hitting streak alive with a 2RBI off his own, leaving two on. That two became three as Carns was walked, loading the bases once more as Barrett got his turn at the plate. He reached on a fielder’s choice but Dowd was out at home, delaying the run-rule for just a moment as shortly after, Fraser’s right side single scored DeLamielleure and clinched the 11-1 win for Florida State.
The Seminoles will attempt to earn a sweep of the Hurricanes tomorrow at 2 p.m., with the game set to be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
