TheĀ No. 12 Florida State SeminolesĀ softball team beat theĀ North Carolina Tar HeelsĀ 8-4 on Friday at JoAnne Graf Field. They snapped their three-game losing streak with the win, improving to 37-7 overall and 13-3 in ACC play.
FSU wasted no time taking control of the game, loading the bases with no outs in the first inning. Anna Hinde made it a 1-0 game with a sacrifice fly. Bella Ruggiero made it a 2-0 game with a single before Kennedy Harp blew it open with a three-run homer, giving them a 5-0 lead.
They added on in the second inning when Isa Torres hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jaysoni Beachum. The Tar Heels got in on the scoring in the fourth inning after Jazzy Francik issued a leadoff walk.
A triple made it a 6-1 game before a sacrifice fly drove in another run. Fracik was able to get back-to-back groundouts to keep the threat and prevent North Carolina from chipping further away at the lead.
Francik allowed just two runs in six innings of work, striking out seven batters and holding North Carolina to two hits and two walks.
Makenna Reid started the seventh inning for FSU but was unable to close it out, as North Carolina loaded the bases on two walks and two singles. It could have been worse, but Beachum got an out on the bases when North Carolina's runner rounded second, and she threw behind her for an easy out.
Ashtyn Danley came in and got the final out to end the game with a groundout. She did allow a two-RBI single.
Marin Heller got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, hitting a leadoff homer to put FSU up 7-2. Harp drove in another run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Madi Frey, who was running for Anna Hinde.
FSU finished the game with nine hits and two walks to one strikeout. Torres and Ruggiero both finished with multiple hits, and Harp had a game-high 4 RBI. They hit .333 (2-6) with runners in scoring position.
FSU and North Carolina will return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET for the second game of the series. The game will be on the ACC Network.
