FSU women's golf advance to 10th straight national championship

Florida State women's golf head coach Amy Bond still gets chills when she thinks about it.

The Seminoles have been a dominant force on the course under Bond, and on Wednesday, May 13, FSU extended its run of National Championship tournament appearances to a decade straight with a second-place (-4) finish at the NCAA Tallahassee regional at Seminole Legacy Golf Club.

"It's 10 straight national championships, and that just gave me a lot of chills right there, because it's really hard to make it to the national championship," Bond said. "I'm extremely proud, because that's 10 different teams that have now qualified. So I'm ecstatic."

FSU shot even par in the final round, which proved to be a challenging day on the course as just three teams finished under par on the day. Wake Forest fired an inspired -10 to win the regional after starting the day +2 as a team.

Sophia Fullbrook led the Seminoles with a round of 68. She was bogey-free until the 18th hole, where she recorded a five that meant she shared the individual regional title with Wake Forest's Morgan Ketchum, who had a miraculous par save on the 18th.

Regardless of the outcome, Fullbrook said the regional proved that the young Seminoles squad can compete with anyone as they've got "a lot of grit." With a share of the individual title and a team second place, Fullbrook now has her eyes set on the national championship rounds.

"It's definitely given me confidence," Fullbrook said of her performance. "But I know that we aren't done yet. It's great, but I know there is more to come."

Fullbrook, who is a sophomore, leads a Seminoles team that features a combined seven freshmen and sophomores.

It's a youthful roster, but one that is competing at a high level, something that excites Bond ahead of the national championship tournament at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California, which starts on Friday, May 22.

"This team feeds off of each other. I mean, with them just being freshmen and sophomores, it is fun to see who's going to step up next, and we had everybody step up this week in some way, shape or form," Bond said. "So I'm super excited. I mean, the future is bright, but we're in the now, right now, so I'm pretty pumped to see what they can do in California next week."
