Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Garrett Nussmeier addressed reporters in a press conference for the first time shortly after being selected 249th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. He shared his expectations going into working with Head Coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
"It was pretty minimal (pre-draft conversations with Chiefs). I think it's crazy how some of these teams do their work, and they like to hide who they like, and some like to show it. It's a big chess match," said Nussmeier. "I'm just so excited, it's a great opportunity for me to learn and develop and be under a great coach (Head Coach Andy Reid) and obviously behind one of the best quarterbacks (Patrick Mahomes) of all time."
Injuries plagued Nussmeier last season at LSU. He notably suffered an abdominal injury that worsened in November, severely affecting his performance and progress, limiting him to 9 games and to 1,927 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He gushed over the possibilities of working with Reid and Mahomes this upcoming season.
"I can only imagine," said Nussmeier, "I'm so excited to be in a room with those guys and (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid and his unbelievable offensive mind and obviously sitting behind Patrick (Mahomes) and getting to learn from him (and) hopefully steal some things from him and see the game through his eyes. It's going to be an unbelievable experience for me. Something that I'm really grateful for."
Nussmeier's breakout season was in 2024; he was a finalist for the Manning Award as the nation's top quarterback. He finished that campaign with 4,052 passing yards, and he tied for 10th with 29 passing touchdowns in 13 games.
