George Russell accused of pointing fingers at Mercedes as early-season pressure mounts

George Russell has found himself under fire after comments that appeared to suggest Mercedes were behind his early-season struggles, with momentum shifting in favour of Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the title race.

Heading into 2026, many had pegged Russell as the clear favourite for the drivers’ crown, especially with expectations high for Mercedes under the new engine regulations. His early form only added to that narrative, but things have changed since then.

Russell opened the season by taking victory at the Australian Grand Prix from pole and followed up with a Sprint win in Shanghai. But during Chinese GP qualifying, the balance within Mercedes began to tip towards Antonelli, and Russell has yet to regain his footing.

The 19-year-old has now built a 20-point cushion over Russell at the top of the F1 standings, holding 100 points compared to Russell’s 80.

Russell has made no secret of his discomfort with the Miami circuit, often citing the lack of grip at Hard Rock Stadium as an issue. But Riccardo Ceccarelli thinks there’s more to it, pointing to Russell’s radio chatter during the race as a sign he’s feeling the pressure from Antonelli.

During team radio communications after the race in Florida, Russell described Antonelli’s performance gains as “weird”, noting that he had switched some settings to mirror those used by his teammate. Ceccarelli interpreted these comments as signs of growing anxiety for the Briton.

“Russell is having a bit of a crisis and showing signs of nervousness, which he’s transmitting via some team radio that’s a bit negative,” Ceccarelli told Motorsport.com.

“And perhaps he’s also placing blame on external factors – [like] the team or poor strategies. Antonelli’s strength is his calmness, as if he never expends too much energy, while George is spiralling and starting to suffer from the gap.”
