George Russell is currently 20 points behind teammate Kimi Antonelli in the Drivers’ Championship, raising concerns about his title chances. Despite being an experienced driver, Russell faces stiff competition from the younger Antonelli, who has shown impressive performance early in the season.
Mercedes driver George Russell sits 20 points behind his teammate Kimi Antonelli for the lead in the Drivers’ Championship, and while it is early, he could be on the cusp of missing out on a title challenge.
Russell is an experienced F1 driver at this point, with eight years behind the wheel. His teammate, on the other hand, is only in his second season.
However, it is Antonelli who has stepped up early in 2026 during a new regulation cycle and delivered an outstanding pace.
Mercedes has the best car on the grid due to their power unit expertise, and, as the team leader with the most on-track experience, Russell was the odds-on favorite to finally make a real title push.

While Russell won the first race in Australia, showing blistering pace, he has been slowly usurped by Antonelli, who leads the title race and has the momentum.
However, a track that Russell has previously done well in is coming up next on the schedule, and failure to win the race or at least beat Anontelli will have a drastic effect on the British driver’s title odds.
The Athletic’s Alex Kalinauckas laid out everything at stake in Canada for Russell and what he needs to do to re-enter the title picture.
“The gap in points would have been smaller if Russell had better luck in China and Japan. At least in Miami, he took advantage of the wild end to Charles Leclerc’s race and finished fourth,” Kalinauckas wrote.
“Champions need to gain places on bad days — but they also need to minimize the frequency of those bad days and beat their rivals on tracks they prefer. Next up, F1 heads to Canada, where Russell has shone over the years, including his win last year.
