Yet Russell, driving the leading Mercedes car and this yearâs championship favourite, reflected on the 2022 season, when his team were badly impacted by an uncomfortable and underperforming car and Verstappenâs Red Bull team were flying high.
âFormula 1 is bigger than any driver,â Russell said in a media call on Friday. âYou wouldnât want to lose Max because we all love racing against Max.
âItâs just part and parcel of Formula 1. I didnât enjoy driving the 2022 car when it was porpoising up and down, killing everyoneâs backs, it was a heavy car. But he didnât have the same complaint because he was winning.
âThe complaints he has currently are different to the complaints of Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren because weâre at the front of the grid, that is only natural.
âHeâs achieved what most drivers can only dream of: heâs won a world championship. Heâs got four of them. At the end of the day, thereâs not much more for him to achieve in Formula 1.â

âI can understand why driving the Nordschleife does put a smile on his face, Iâd love that chance. Iâve done hundreds of laps around there on the simulator, but my goal is to become an F1 world champion.

Meanwhile, Russell believes Mercedesâ dominance will not last all season as the likes of Ferrari and McLaren eye an improvement in performance at the next round in Miami on 3 May.
âI donât expect our major pace advantage to continue indefinitely,â he said. âThe others will be hot on our heels.â
Asked about his a potential intra-team title fight with Kimi Antonelli, currently nine points ahead in the standings, Russell said: âThe team will 100% give the same opportunity for the two of us.
âThatâs always been the case at the team ever since the Lewis [Hamilton] and Nico [Rosberg] days. I donât want to get ahead of ourselves. After three races in 2022, Leclerc had a 30-plus point lead and Verstappen was saying the championship over.
âFerrari was quickest and then by the end of the season, they were not. The championship is not in my mind. I just try to maximise my performance and weâll count the points up at the end of the season.â
