The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs baseball team blew an 8-0 lead against the No. 18 Ole Miss Rebels, losing Game 1 of a doubleheader 10-8 after Ole Miss scored 10 consecutive runs. Georgia's pitching struggles continue to be a concern as they aim for the College World Series.
The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs baseball team blew an 8-0 lead on the road against the No. 18 Ole Miss Rebels in Game 1. Georgia went up 8-0 in the top of the fourth inning after Henry Allen had a two-run single. Ole Miss went on to score 10 consecutive runs to win the first game of the doubleheader.
Georgia allowed Ole Miss to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth and five runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Rebels held a 10-8 lead heading into the ninth inning. Ole Miss sealed the deal in the top of the ninth to win. All 10 of Ole Miss' runs came from five home runs.
Georgia's collapse is the latest in a brutal stretch of pitching for the Bulldogs. Georgia allowed 14 runs in their series-clinching win over No. 24 Arkansas last week, but the Bulldogs won behind a historic 26-run performance from the Bulldogs' bats. Georgia then lost to No. 3 Georgia Tech 14-4 at Truist Park during a midweek game.
The Dawgs struggles on the mound are not as noticeable since Georgia has a historically good offense, but if Georgia is going to make the College World Series, then the Bulldogs need more consistent pitching.
Following Game 1's disappointment, the Bulldogs bounced back to win Game 2, which turned into an absolute marathon. Tre Phelps' go-ahead home run helped Georgia take a lead in the top of the 14th inning. The Bulldogs closed the door this time (after allowing multiple base runners in the bottom of the 14th) to win 9-7.
Game 3, which will decide the winner of the Georgia-Ole Miss series, will be played on Sunday, April 26 at 2:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on SEC Network+.
