April 22 (UPI) -- Germany's Serge Gnabry is out for the 2026 World Cup, he announced Wednesday on social media.
Bayern Munich said earlier this week that Gnabry sustained a torn adductor muscle in his right thigh while taking penalty kicks during a training session.
"The last few days have been tough to process," Gnabry wrote Wednesday on Instagram and Facebook. "An FC Bayern season which still holds much to play for after securing another Bundesliga title on the weekend. As for the World Cup dream with Germany, that's sadly over for me.
"Like the rest of the country, I'll be supporting the boys from home. Now it's time to focus on recovery and getting back for pre-season. Thank you for all the messages."
Gnabry played as an attacking midfielder for 72 minutes in Bayern's 4-3 win over Real Madrid in the second leg of their Championship League quarterfinal April 15 in Munich. He did not play in a 4-2 Bundesliga win over VfB Stuttgart on Sunday in Munich.
He was a starting winger for Germany in two friendlies last month. The Germans will host Finland in another friendly May 31 in Mainz. They will take on the United States in another friendly June 6 in Chicago.
The four-time World Cup champions will take on Curacao in their 2026 tournament opener June 14 in Houston.
Bayern (25-1-4) clinched the Bundesliga crown for the 34th time with Sunday's victory. The Reds will meet Leverkusen in a German Cup semifinal at 2:45 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Leverkusen, Germany. They will play in the first leg of a Champions League semifinal April 28 in Paris.
