The San Francisco 49ers have signed eight undrafted free agents for the upcoming season, including a tight end, a punter, three defensive linemen, two wide receivers, and a safety. These players will compete for spots on the 53-man roster.
The San Francisco 49ers on Sunday officially added eight undrafted free agents to their rookie class for this season.
Their UDFA class is relatively thin in terms of variety. They added a tight end and a punter, three defensive linemen, two wide receivers and a safety. All eight players will hold 90-man roster spots with chances to compete for a place on the 53-man roster, although for many UDFAs just earning a practice squad spot is a good start.
Here's a quick peek at each 49ers undrafted free agent signing:
Bouwmeester is a former Aussie rules football player who began his college career at Michigan State in 2019. He didn't play for the Spartans and was out of college football until 2022 when he caught on with the University of Utah. In three years with the Utes and one with Texas, he averaged 43.8 yards per punt across 52 games.
There's a lot to like about Dinkins as a UDFA addition. He measured in at 6-4, 251 at the NFL combine and clocked a 4.72 40-yard dash. His production wasn't stellar in five college seasons that featured 15 starts in 49 games. He hauled in just 37 receptions. However, he turned those 37 catches into 399 yards and seven touchdowns.
Eason spent six years in college, all with the Volunteers, but he didn't become a regular contributor until his third season when he began a streak of four years in a row playing in 13 games. Prior to that he participated in only nine contests. In his final 52 games he put together some production with 20 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. The fact he wasn't a full-time starter until his fifth college dampens some of the optimism about the strides he made in his final couple of seasons. Eason has good size (6-2, 323 pounds at the combine) and experience which should help him hit the ground running in his first professional training camp.
It'll be a steep uphill climb to a roster spot for Grimes in a crowded 49ers receiver room. He played at Wake Forest for two years before transferring to NC State for two years. He was consistently productive over his final three seasons and finished his career with 77 catches for 1,121 yards and nine touchdowns in 43 games. At 6-2, 194 he has NFL size, but he'll need to prove himself to be a more productive player than he was in college if he's going to ultimately make his way onto a 53-man roster.

While all eight players will hold 90-man roster spots, many UDFAs aim for a practice squad spot, with some competing for a place on the 53-man roster.

This is probably the most 49ers UDFA of the group. Kamara doesn't jump off the screen with his size or athleticism, but he's constantly around the football and threatening the backfield. He was at James Madison for four years before transferring to Indiana for his final two seasons. He was a starter for his final three seasons and posted 39.5 tackles for loss, 18.5 sacks and five forced fumbles in those three seasons (41 games, all starts). Kamara has some versatility and he should be in the mix for a 53-man spot on an evolving 49ers defensive line out of the gate.
We can put Pauling in a bucket with Grimes, it's just that Pauling measured in at 5-9, 183 pounds and ran a 4.46 40-yard dash. In his lone season with the Fighting Irish, Pauling had just 26 catches for 381 yards, but he did put up six touchdown catches to bring his career mark to 15.
The 49ers' need at safety could put Stroman in a position to immediately compete for a roster spot. His overall lack of athleticism may be a problem that limits what he can do in an NFL secondary. Across five college seasons he started only 13 of the 48 games he played, and he tallied only seven pass breakups with one interception. At 6-0, 203 pounds he's a touch small to be a player the 49ers convert to linebacker, which will further limit his opportunities to carve out a place on the roster.
Taking fliers on big defensive linemen is never a bad idea. Thompson is pushing 6-6 and weighed in at 308 pounds at Illinois' Pro Day. He spent five seasons at Wisconsin before joining the Fighting Illini for his final college campaign. He started all 13 games last season and posted 41 tackles with three tackles for loss and two sacks. Perhaps defensive line coach Kris Kocurek can help him become a consistent enough player that he contributes to the 49ers D-line rotation.
