Get to know the new Lobo: A few questions with incoming freshman guard Dax Hall

Dax Hall, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Carlsbad, California, has signed to play for the UNM Lobos this coming season.

Dax Hall, known by Lobo fans as the younger brother of star freshman shooting guard Jake Hall, more than made a name for himself as the CIF San Diego Section Player of the Year this past season, averaging 27.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 3.4 steals at Santa Fe Christian School.

The younger Hall has a different game than his older brother, and the two will be teammates for the first time at UNM, as they went to different high schools.

The Journal reached out to Dax Hall to ask a few introductory questions. The following are his answers via a text exchange.

JOURNAL: What about coach Eric Olen’s system made you want to play for the UNM Lobos?

DAX HALL: The system is just so free and open. There’s gonna be great shooters out there which will keep the spacing great and I believe will allow me to succeed.

JOURNAL: Two-part question on what Lobo fans are about to see in the Dax version of Hall-ball. First, on the court, are you more Uriah Tenette or Jake Hall?

DAX HALL: I would say Uriah just because of the position and the way he plays on defense which is something I’ll try and replicate when I get on the court, but there are definitely differences between our games.

JOURNAL: Second, how would you describe yourself as a player, with or without us trying fit you into a specific player comparison?

DAX HALL: I think of myself as a player who is a facilitator and pesky defender who can score when needed, but will really set up his teammates before anything.

JOURNAL: Obviously, there is some fun sibling rivalry vibes going on with you and Jake. In terms of non-basketball rivalries, what is one thing you genuinely enjoy beating him at? And what is one thing, as much as you hate to admit it, that he is just better than you at?

DAX HALL: One thing I enjoy really beating him at is golf because he never will beat me. But he most definitely is a better surfer than me.

JOURNAL: Any idea what you might want to study at UNM? Any thoughts on what you might want to do one day when basketball is over?

DAX HALL: In high school I did pretty well with numbers, so maybe something in business finance.

JOURNAL: I know you’ve said the coaching staff nailed the recruitment and that relationship is why you chose UNM. But be honest. Would you have picked UNM if the first In-N-Out wasn’t scheduled to be built near the Pit in 2027?

DAX HALL: I would, but coach Wilder (UNM assistant coach and fellow California native Michael Wilder) assured me it was on the way, which made it even more of a no-brainer.

JOURNAL: Game 1 in the Pit this coming season, mom gets to wear one Lobo jersey. It may say “Hall” on the back, but what number is it going to be?
