With the 2026 NFL Draft just days away, the story currently dominating headlines for the New York Giants is the future of defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. Though the Giants have stated publicly that they want to hang onto Lawrence, recent reports suggest that things could be headed in the other direction.
Lawrence has requested that the team either trade him or work out a new deal and new head coach John Harbaugh may suggest to general manager Joe Schoen that he isn't interested in having this situation create a black cloud over the team just months after he took the job, which could lead to a trade.
Gennaro Filice of NFL.com has a trade partner in mind, and it involves a deal with John's brother, Jim Harbaugh, meaning that Lawrence would head to the Los Angeles Chargers. Here were his thoughts:
"Three months into his tenure as Giants head coach, John Harbaugh has encountered his first dilemma, with superstar DT Dexter Lawrence asking to be traded. Immediately following Lawrence’s request, Harbaugh publicly stated the team’s desire to repair the relationship, but said “there’s business involved.” It appears that business has gone south, with NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reporting on Tuesday that the Giants have reached an impasse in extension talks with the three-time Pro Bowler. Maybe it’s time for John to pick up the phone and call his brother. No, to make a deal! I'm thinking Jim Harbaugh could be interested in beefing up the Chargers' defensive front with a 6-foot-4, 340-pound game wrecker. And with cap space galore , can give Lawrence the new megadeal he craves. Is the No. 22 overall pick enough to get a deal done with New York? If not, the Bolts could toss in Quentin Johnston-- a name that’s drawn trade rumors this offseason -- as a sweetener for the WR-needy Giants."
Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade or a new contract, and the Giants have reached an impasse in extension talks.
John Harbaugh may reach out to his brother Jim Harbaugh to discuss a potential trade that would send Lawrence to the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chargers might offer the No. 22 overall pick or potentially include wide receiver Quentin Johnston as part of a trade package for Lawrence.
A trade could significantly impact the Giants' defensive lineup and provide Lawrence with the lucrative contract he desires from the Chargers.

Filice suggests that the Chargers could give up their first-round pick (No. 22 overall) in exchange for Lawrence, but mentions wide receiver Quentin Johnston being thrown in. The Giants should be asking for more than one first-round choice, so throwing in something else should be a must.
It's interesting that he brings up Johnston's name, as Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz recently shut down any trade rumors involving the former first-round pick. However, that doesn't mean much as teams can get an offer they can't refuse and that will change everything.
If the Giants decide to move Lawrence, this is a move that makes plenty of sense.
Jim Harbaugh loves to build his football teams from the line out on both sides of the ball. He appreciates tough, smashmouth football and Lawrence is that kind of player. John Harbaugh has clearly been in his brother's ear about players that could help his roster before, just go look at how many former Ravens players have ended up in L.A. since Jim became the coach.
In this deal, the Giants could send Lawrence to the AFC. It's generally ideal to send a superstar to the opposite conference in a trade, as that will minimize the chance of having to go against that player in the future. It would be a deal that would help both sides, particularly if Johnston was included and it would take the burden of making Lawrence happy financially off the Giants' shoulders and placing that responsibility elsewhere.
