The San Francisco Giants came into the 2026 season with one of the best defensive catchers in the game, Patrick Bailey. He has a great ability to frame pitches, and he has a lightning-fast pop time behind the plate.
However, one thing that does hold him back is what he does with the bat in his hands. He isn't the best slugger, hitting .143/.211/.186 with just one home run and five runs batted in this season.
Despite being a great defensive catcher, he has taken a hit this season with the ABS. Framing is not as important as it once was, and his low offensive numbers are not helping this team.

Luckily for the Giants, they have a great offensive catcher who has turned heads this year. Daniel Susac could do no wrong at the beginning of the season, hitting .478/.500/.652 to start the year.
Patrick Bailey is hitting .143/.211/.186 with one home run and five runs batted in this season.
The ABS has diminished the importance of pitch framing, which has negatively impacted Bailey's value despite his strong defensive skills.
The Giants will need to manage a difficult catching rotation, balancing the strengths and weaknesses of both Bailey and Susac.

Unfortunately, he would hit the 10-day IL retroactive to April 20 with right elbow ulnar neuritis and is working his way back. Some expect him to make his return by mid-May.
He has worked his way to being named the No 10 rookie right now in Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly's latest rookie power rankings.
"The 24-year-old is currently on the injured list with right elbow ulnar neuritis. When he's activated, it will be interesting to see if A) he stays hot at the plate and B) if he can cut into Bailey's playing time."
It will be a difficult decision for San Francisco's front office to make once Susac returns. Bailey is great defensively, but the Giants desperately need some more offense.
They rank dead last in terms of home runs, runs batted in, and runs scored, which doesn't help their dreams of getting over the hump and making the postseason this year.
