The Giants pre-Harbaugh would have counted on Banks to simply get better in the hopes of validating their pre-draft evaluations. Or they would do what Schoen did last year: Built through free agency and paid big money for free agent veteran corner Paulson Adebo as a Band-Aid, while ignoring that position in the 2024 draft until Korie Black’s selection in the seventh round.

Harbaugh, however, replenished the barren corner room with a hard-nosed player under cost control. Now, if Banks rebounds under Harbaugh’s and Wilson’s coaching, the Giants might actually have depth and a future. And if he doesn’t, they hopefully aren’t stuck in a vicious cycle of having to continue addressing the same position every year with a desperate swing.

This is how a professional thinks and operates. The results don’t always follow the process, but Harbaugh’s improved process ideally will raise the floor on the Giants’ fortunes — rather than making it likely that they will annually bottom out.

Kayvon Thibodeaux. The Giants have continued pouring resources into Thibodeaux’s position since selecting him with the fifth pick in the 2022 draft. They traded second- and fifth-round picks for Brian Burns and gave the edge rusher a five-year, $141 million extension during the 2023 offseason. Then the Giants used the No. 3 pick in last year’s draft on edge rusher Abdul Carter. This year, the Giants took Reese with the fifth pick. While the plan is for Reese to play inside linebacker, he’s another premium investment in the mix for playing time on passing downs.

It’s a good problem for the Giants to have so many talented pass rushers, but someone is going to need to sacrifice to make it work. Thibodeaux stands out as the player most likely to be forced to adjust, as he’ll probably shift inside more often on passing downs. His snaps on the edge will likely come mostly on early downs when he’s rotating with Burns and Carter. It’s not an ideal recipe for Thibodeaux to produce the type of stats that will lead to a big payday in a contract year.

23. New York Giants. Most improved position: Linebacker. The Giants spent $13 million this offseason to sign linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and used the No. 5 pick on Ohio State’s Arvell Reese, who will play weakside linebacker. So they’re hoping the unit is significantly improved from last season’s, which began with Bobby Okereke as the middle linebacker and Micah McFadden alongside him.

McFadden also re-signed with the Giants after missing most of last season because of a foot injury. Between Edmunds, Reese and McFadden, the inside linebacker group should be an asset as New York tries to solve its run-stuffing woes. 11. New York Giants: Matayo Uiagalelei, EDGE, Oregon. Uiagalelei has an NFL frame who wins with power and a high motor, particularly when aligning wide. That said, he lacks bend and needs to add to his pass-rush arsenal. His 2025 tape wasn’t nearly as far along as Tuli Tuipulotu coming out of college and he was a second-round pick (54th overall) of similar age and with similar tools. Looking for a big leap in ’26.
