Paying any player $27 million a year comes with major risk.
The San Francisco Giants decided to take that risk last season, but it hasn't worked out in their favor.
"This contract has already been traded once, so maybe I'm underestimating the odds of it happening again, but I just can't see it," FanSided's Zachary Rotman wrote Tuesday. "Yes, the Giants are eager to offload the [Rafael] Devers deal, and who knows, maybe if they're willing to attach a ton of prospects, they can find a taker, but barring that, Devers might have the worst and most untradeable contract in the sport right now."
Devers is hitting .275 in his last 20 games, with 19 hits and 10 RBIs. He's finding his power stroke again, hitting a home run in three of his last five games.
But the Giants likely know that Devers won't be able to keep up that production throughout the season. His value on the trade market is lower than most due to his defensive limitations.

Rafael Devers' $313.5 million contract is viewed as untradeable due to its high annual cost of $27 million and the Giants' struggles to find a willing trade partner.
The burden of Devers' expensive contract limits the Giants' financial flexibility, hindering their ability to strengthen the team for a postseason run.
If the Giants attempt to offload Devers' contract, they may need to include significant prospects, which could impact their future roster development.

"To sum up, Devers is a bat-first DH who hasn't hit well really since being acquired by the Giants and doesn't do anything else well, either," Rotman added. "He's this kind of player, while making nearly $30 million annually for the better part of the next decade. The Giants can want to offload this contract all they want, but good luck finding a taker."
San Francisco is 17-24 and 6.5 games back of the third and final Wild Card spot. Devers needs to start playing like an MVP candidate again if they want any shot at making the postseason.
