Gila Turns Down Lazio Renewal as New Suitor Could Overtake AC Milan
Mario Gila isn’t planning to open a dialogue with Lazio over a new contract, as AC Milan and Napoli prepare to battle for his services.
In the summer of 2022, the Spaniard penned a five-year deal with the Biancocelesti after sealing a move from Real Madrid. Since then, the 25-year-old has gradually established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A, but the terms of his contract have never been reviewed, so he remains one of the club’s lowest earners with a yearly net salary of €1.1 million.
And yet, the player’s agent, Alejandro Camano, had recently insisted that his client is in no rush to negotiate new terms, insisting that he’s happy to honor his contract.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Gila and his entourage have closed the door on new contract talks and have already communicated their decision to the club’s hierarchy. Therefore, Claudio Lotito and Angelo Fabiani have been handed two options: Sell the player this summer, or allow him to leave for free next year.
The Lazio management are thus willing to listen to offers for the Spanish defender this summer, but they are unlikely to entertain lower bids, as they already owe Real Madrid 50% of the transfer.
Mario Gila turned down Lazio's contract renewal because he remains one of the club's lowest earners and is seeking better opportunities.
AC Milan and Napoli are both interested in signing Mario Gila as he considers his future.
Mario Gila currently earns a net salary of €1.1 million per year at Lazio.

In recent weeks, Milan emerged as the ultimate frontrunners in the race for Gila. The Rossoneri’s interest is fueled by the desire of their sporting director, Igli Tare, to reunite with the player he had brought to Lazio four years ago. Massimiliano Allegri is also said to be a keen admirer of the Barcelona native.
Nevertheless, the pink newspaper reveals that Napoli are trying to overtake Milan in the race. While the Diavolo have been dragged into the Champions League battle, the Partenopei have practically sealed their place in next season’s edition, giving them a head start in their summer plans.
Interestingly, Napoli have also identified Maurizio Sarri as their first choice to replace Antonio Conte if the latter decides to leave the club. Nevertheless, their interest in Gila doesn’t necessarily hinge on their managerial situation.
