Rutgers Baseball wins series vs. Ohio State
Rutgers Baseball takes series against Ohio State, winning two of three games.

Blythe Schmidt scored her first two varsity goals as the Ottumwa Bulldogs defeated Centerville 9-0 at the Redette Classic. The win ended a four-match losing streak for the Bulldogs.
CENTERVILLE — Blythe Schmidt has spent over 1,900 minutes over three seasons as an Ottumwa High School varsity soccer player seeing the game from in front of the net.
On Saturday, Schmidt saw the game from a different perspective. For over 60 minutes, Schmidt was the one delivering shots instead of trying to stop them.
"That was a lot of fun to be able to do that," Schmidt said. "It's been awhile since I played up on the field. It's crazy looking at the field from a different angle. It's a different pace than just playing as a goalie."
Schmidt adjusted well, driving a pair of shots past Centerville starting goalie Ava Pfannebecker in the second half for her first two high school varsity soccer goals. Ellie Straus and Kumatume Tolcha also found the back of the net for the first time as members of the OHS varsity girls soccer squad, helping the Bulldogs snap a four-match losing streak with a 9-0 win over the Redettes in the first of Centerville's four home tournament matches played on Saturday at Paul Johnson Field.
"I've played forward a few times and the wing a few times either for the junior varsity team or for my club team," Schmidt said. "I'm not completely unfamiliar with this, but it's always different every time."
Ottumwa bounced back quickly after a 7-3 loss at home to Burlington on Friday, allowing four goals in the second half allowing the Grayhounds to pull away despite a hat trick from Ilana Vasconez. The Bulldogs and Redettes kicked off their match early on Saturday morning to accommodate the need to wrap up the tournament earlier with Centerville High School's prom taking place that night, opening the tournament shortly after 7:30 a.m.
"Playing three matches in less than 24 hours is a lot," Ottumwa head girls soccer coach Matthew Erlandson said. "We didn't get the results we wanted, but I thought we played well against Burlington. We were able to get a lot of girls a lot of experience and got many of those girls a lot of touches."
Vasconez, however, would once again open the scoring for the Bulldogs on Saturday finding the back of the net in the early minutes giving Ottumwa a 1-0 lead. Vasconez added her sixth goal of the season, and second of the match, with just over 10 minutes left in the first half giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
"The number of assists we get is just as huge," Erlandson said. "Even though Ilana scores a lot of goals, it comes from a lot of different places. We're not just sending the ball from one place. Other players are getting in good positions to score as well, which we're going to need going forward."
The second goal of the day by Vasconez was immediately followed by the first wave of mass substitutions by the Bulldogs, utilizing depth to counter 200 minutes of varsity soccer action in less than 24 hours. Tolcha found the back of the net for the first time less than a minute later before Straus finished off the first half against Centerville scoring her first two varsity goals in a span of 97 seconds lifting Ottumwa to a commanding 5-0 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs won the match against the Redettes with a score of 9-0.
Blythe Schmidt, Ellie Straus, and Kumatume Tolcha all scored their first varsity goals in the match.
Blythe Schmidt scored two goals and played as a forward for over 60 minutes, showcasing her versatility.
The win was significant as it snapped the Bulldogs' four-match losing streak, boosting team morale.

"It felt like a big accomplishment to get that first goal," Straus said. "This is my first season of high school soccer. I was very surprised to see that first goal go in the net. I really didn't think I was going to make it. After I saw it go in, I knew could do it. It gave me more confidence to attack the net. I really tried hard to make my runs at the goal."
Vasconez followed up Schmidt's first two varsity goals by securing her second hat trick in as many matches, lifting the Bulldogs to an eight-goal lead. Haley Pao closed out the scoring by sending in a shot off a rebound after Pfannebecker's 15th save of the match with 41 seconds left.
"It was a lot of fun to get some points and get a win in," Schmidt said. "We've had a good season. This was a good way to get back on track."
Centerville wrapped up the day early, battling Keokuk (3-6) into the second half as Pfannebecker made 10 more saves against the Chiefs to give the Redettes a chance at avoiding a sixth straight loss. Bella Boltz goal in the 41st minute off a feed from Makenna Thomas, however, proved to be enough offense for Keokuk to escape with a 1-0 win.
"We're definitely more of a defensive team. We're really trying to work on our offense," Pfannebecker said. "Building our defense has done a lot for us. It's nice to know that I have defenders there that can help me, but I've also been put in a lot of one-on-one situations. That's probably my biggest struggle right now. I'm trying to get my confidence back to be ready on anything to come at me, because you never know when someone is going to take a shot."
Vasconez gave Ottumwa a chance to earn a pair of wins on Saturday by scoring two more goals against Grinnell in the third match of the Redette Classic. Both goals, however, were matched by Tiger sophomore Katelyn Sieck who scored three of Grinnell's five goals in the tournament including a tying strike with under four minutes left just 55 seconds after Vasconez had scored a go-ahead goal for the Bulldogs leaving Grinnell (1-6-1) and Ottumwa settling for a 2-2 draw in the tournament's decisive match.
"I know Grinnell has had a tough season, but they're a good team," Erlandson said. "I thought we had it there at the end when Ilana scored. We just weren't quite able to close it out."
Ottumwa (2-4-1) heads to Indianola this Friday. Centerville (1-6) returns to South Central Conference action on Tuesday at home against Chariton on Tuesday.
