Carolina Panthers GM Dan Morgan confirmed that the team plans to exercise quarterback Bryce Young's fifth-year option after the draft. This decision follows similar moves by other 2023 draftees who have already had their options picked up.
It'll be a matter of when, not if the Carolina Panthers pick up the fifth-year option of quarterback Bryce Young.
President of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan hosted his pre-draft press conference on Tuesday morning. He was asked if the team will officially exercise Young's option following the selection process.
"Yeah," replied Morgan, who had stated those intentions back in January. "Once the draft's over, we'll definitely get that going."
The Panthers have yet to officially trigger that fifth year for Young, despite a handful of his fellow 2023 draftees—including Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and pass rusher Will Anderson, Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba—already getting theirs.
Morgan was then asked why Carolina has been waiting to do so.
"Obviously, the player's not in the building yet. So, once Bryce gets in the building, and we're busy with the draft, it's offseason," he responded. "So we'll get that done as soon as he gets back in the building."
Young—in helping lead the Panthers to their first playoff berth in eight seasons and their first NFC South title in 10—recorded career-highs in completion percentage (63.6), passing yards (3,011), passing touchdowns (23) and passer rating (87.8).
