New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani is partnering with Gotham FC to provide 1,000 tickets to the NWSL team's May 9 match against Boston Legacy FC at an affordable price.
Mamdani announced on his Instagram and X accounts that he'd be attending the game and pushing for more fans to be able to head to Sports Illustrated Stadium.
"$5 TICKETS ARE ALMOST GONE" a message on the Gotham FC website read. At time of writing, the $5 tickets were sold out, though the club also provided a "MAYORMAMDANI" code allowing fans to get 20% off their regularly priced tickets for the match.
Mamdani has proven his soccer fan bona fides, citing deep cuts off Arsenal rosters of old to show his Gunners fandom and hosting an AFCON final watch party at Surrogate’s Court in Manhattan.
Mamdani also has pushed for more affordable soccer tickets before, launching a "Game over Greed" petition during his campaign that called on FIFA to cease the use of dynamic pricing for World Cup matches.
“The biggest sporting event in the world is happening in our backyard and the vast majority of New Yorkers won’t be able to see it," he wrote at the time.
Fans can use the code 'MAYORMAMDANI' for a 20% discount on regular-priced tickets for the May 9 match.
Mamdani's partnership aims to make soccer more accessible by providing affordable ticket options for fans.
The $5 tickets were limited in availability and have sold out quickly due to high demand.
Mamdani previously launched a 'Game over Greed' petition advocating against dynamic pricing for World Cup matches.

Those efforts look to have proved fruitless as FIFA continues to release batches of tickets with varying prices. Additionally, NJ Transit and FIFA have been locked in a feud centering around the transportation agency's plan to charge $150 for train tickets to access MetLife Stadium, where the World Cup final will take place.
Fans will have a more affordable option heading to the NWSL match in Harrison, New Jersey — though Gotham also is looking for a big crowd of New Yorkers when it plays a July 16 match at Citi Field in Queens against the Washington Spirit.
Mamdani and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also announced Monday that fans will be able to attend free fan festivals in each of New York City's boroughs during the World Cup to celebrate the tournament, even if they were unable to secure tickets to matches.
