Things didn’t go Germany’s way in their opener at the IIHF World Championship against Finland on Friday, but don’t blame German defenseman Moritz Seider of the Detroit Red Wings for that.
The German captain was his usual reliable self in their 3-1 loss to the Finns. Detroit defenseman Seider skated 34 shifts, adding up to 25:02 in total ice time. He put two shots on goal and was even for the game.
Seider was also the contributor of the highlight of the night – arguably, the highlight moment from the tournament so far.
German goaltender Philipp Grubauer of the Seattle Kraken lunged in an attempt to poke-check away from Finland’s Waltteri Merela. However, Grubauer was only able to get a piece of the puck, creating a goal-mouth scramble.
Prone on the ice, Grubauer was down and out as Merela chipped the puck toward the vacated German net. Standing behind his goalie, Detroit rearguard Seider was the only German player in a position to defend the net.
Merela’s weak shot slipped through Seider’s leg. But he did a 180-degree spin and, lunging, was able to reach back with his stick and pull the puck off the goal line.
