The Jacksonville Jaguars added to the running back position on Monday, signing veteran Ameer Abdullah.
Let's grade this move.
This addition replenishes the depth at running back for the Jaguars. Along with signing Abdullah, the Jaguars also felt it was time to move on from second-year running back Ja'Quinden Jackson. Adding Abdullah to the mix boosts the training camp depth.
Abdullah brings experience to a relatively young position group and can impact the game in a variety of ways, including as a pass catcher and a return man on kickoffs. As a veteran, he should be able to catch on to Liam Coen's offense relatively quickly, and his robust skill set allows the Jaguars to utilize him in a variety of ways.
There really is no downside to this move. One would guess that this is a low-risk deal for the Jaguars from a contractual standpoint, allowing them to get out of the deal if needed during roster cutdowns.
Then, as mentioned, Abdullah enhances the depth of this unit, and he adds a well-rounded skill set to the room as well.
The top of the running back depth chart seems pretty well established with Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez, and LeQuint Allen. That said, the Jaguars often carried four running backs last season. Perhaps Abdullah can push for that fourth spot, or if the Jaguars decide to go in a different direction, they may have the inside track to signing him to their practice squad, which is where he began last season while with the Colts.
Grade: B-, A low-risk move with some potential upside and added veteran stability at the position.
The Jaguars signed Ameer Abdullah to replenish their running back depth and enhance competition during training camp.
With Abdullah's signing, the Jaguars decided to move on from Ja'Quinden Jackson, indicating a shift in their running back roster.
Ameer Abdullah's veteran experience adds valuable depth and leadership to the Jaguars' running back position as they prepare for the season.
