The Greensboro Grasshoppers defeated the Greenville Drive 11-9 in a close game, overcoming an early deficit with strong innings. Isaiah Jackson led the Drive with four hits and three RBIs, but it wasn't enough to secure a win.
GREENSBORO (Greenville Drive) â The Greenville Drive piled up 15 hits and mounted a late rally Tuesday night, but a pair of big innings by the Greensboro Grasshoppers proved too much to overcome in an 11-9 loss in the opener of a six-game series at First National Bank Field.
Greenville (13-15) led 5-3 after four innings and brought the potential tying run to the plate in each of the final two frames, but Greensboro (17-11) used a five-run fourth and a three-run sixth to take control.
Isaiah Jackson paced the Drive offense with a four-hit night, finishing 4-for-5 with three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Yoeilin Cespedes added three hits, Henry Godbout homered, scored three times and drove in two, and Freili Encarnacion went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
The Drive opened the scoring in the second against Greensboro starter Hung-Leng Chang. Jackson singled to center, stole second and moved to third on Mason Whiteâs double to shallow right. Encarnacion followed with an RBI groundout to give Greenville a 1-0 lead.
Greensboro answered immediately in the bottom half when Tony Blanco Jr. drove a solo homer to right-center field off Alex Bouchard, tying the game at 1-1.
Greenville moved back in front in the third with a four-hit inning. Godbout singled up the middle, Cespedes followed with a single to shallow center and Gerardo Rodriguez loaded the bases with a single to left-center. Jack Winnay brought home Godbout with a sacrifice fly, and Jackson followed with an RBI single to right-center to score Cespedes and put the Drive ahead 3-1.
The Grasshoppers pulled even in the bottom of the third after Matt King reached on a throwing error, Wyatt Sanford singled and Edward Florentino delivered an RBI single to right. Easton Carmichael then grounded out to short, scoring Sanford to tie the game at 3-3.
Godbout gave the Drive the lead again in the fourth. After Justin Gonzales reached on a fielding error by Blanco Jr., Godbout launched a two-run homer to left field on an 0-1 pitch, his fourth of the season, pushing Greenville ahead 5-3.
Greensboro responded with the decisive inning in the bottom of the fourth. Blanco Jr. walked, Shalin Polanco singled and Ivan Brethowr drove in a run with a double to right. King followed with a fielderâs choice that scored Polanco, and the Grasshoppers took advantage of three Greenville miscues in the inning.
A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed Brethowr to score, King stole third, and Sanford walked before Sanford stole second and King stole home. A throwing error on the play moved Sanford to third, and a passed ball brought him in to cap the five-run frame and give Greensboro an 8-5 lead.
The final score was Greensboro Grasshoppers 11, Greenville Drive 9.
Isaiah Jackson had four hits and three RBIs, while Yoeilin Cespedes and Freili Encarnacion also contributed significantly with multiple hits.
The Grasshoppers scored five runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the sixth inning, which helped them take control of the game.
After the loss, the Greenville Drive's record fell to 13 wins and 15 losses.

Greenville got one run back in the fifth against Connor Oliver. Winnay walked, White drew a walk and Encarnacion singled to load the bases. Yophery Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Winnay and trimming the deficit to 8-6.
The Drive threatened again in the sixth after Godbout reached on an error and Gerardo Rodriguez singled, but a double play ended the inning. In the seventh, Jackson and Encarnacion each singled, and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Oliver escaped with back-to-back strikeouts.
Greensboro added three insurance runs in the sixth against Ben Hansen. Brethowr walked, Sanford singled and Carmichael delivered a two-run single to left. Axiel Plaz followed with an RBI single up the middle, stretching the Grasshoppersâ lead to 11-6.
Greenville made one final push in the eighth. Godbout walked, Cespedes reached on an error and Winnay walked to load the bases. Jackson then singled to right-center, scoring Godbout and Cespedes to make it 11-8. After Alexis Torres entered for Greensboro, Encarnacion lined a double down the left-field line to score Winnay and pull the Drive within two.
Yophery Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Torres struck out Gonzales to strand three and preserve Greensboroâs 11-9 lead.
Steven Brooks kept the Drive within striking distance with two perfect innings out of the bullpen, striking out two across the seventh and eighth.
Greenville brought the tying run aboard again in the ninth when Cespedes singled and Gerardo Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, but Winnay lined into an unassisted double play at second to end the game.
Bouchard (0-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs, seven earned, on five hits over 3.2 innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Oliver (3-0) earned the win for Greensboro, allowing four runs, two earned, over 3.1 innings. Torres recorded his first save.
Greenville finished 6-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base. Greensboro went 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded three.
The Drive continue the six-game series against Greensboro on Wednesday at First National Bank Field.
