Scarlet Harris, a track star from Great Falls High, is preparing for her junior season with high hopes after a demanding state meet last year. She aims to improve her performance by better managing her time and maintaining focus.

At last yearâs state meet in Kalispell, Scarlet Harris hardly had a moment to spare.
A qualifier in six individual events and a relay, the Great Falls High track star endured as rigorous a schedule as any in the field.
Now in her junior season with the same goals in mind, Harris feels better prepared to face the gauntlet of a state meet.
âI learned so much last year,â Harris said. âThroughout the season, Iâve learned to manage my time a little bit better and focusing and having a clear head going to each event. Iâm excited for state.â

The Tribuneâs Girlsâ Athlete of the Spring the past two years, Harris has proven to be one of the most well-rounded athletes in Montana. She again has state-qualifying marks in six individual events â the 100- and 200-meter dashes, high jump, long jump and both hurdles.
The hurdles are where the junior truly shines, as she ranks second in Class AA in the 100 hurdles (15.19) to Kalispell Flatheadâs Bristol Lenz (14.95) and sixth in 300 (46.40).
Harris said she experienced some frustration at the beginning of the season as she was behind her times from last year. Great Falls High head coach Dave Kilian and the staff assured Harris of the process, with the goal of running your best times at the end of the season.

The assurance has come to fruition so far, as Harris has clocked her top times of the year in recent weeks.
Harris ran her best time in the 100 (12.74) at the Golden Triangle Meet in late April before a season-best in the 100 hurdles (15.19) in a dual with Helena High on May 9. In the long hurdles (46.40), Harris shaved more than eight-tenths of a second off her previous-best time at the Crosstown Meet on May 12 to conclude the regular season.

Kilian said he knew it would take time for Harris to adjust to track conditioning coming out of basketball season, and the marks would take care of themselves down the line.
âItâs difficult coming out of that grind at the end of basketball when the conditioning goes off to the side, and so youâre not always in great track shape coming out of your winter sport,â Kilian said. âSo, a lot of it was reassuring her, âHey, youâre going to be fine.â I see her a lot more relaxed, a lot more at ease because now the fruits of the labor are really starting to show.â
Harris was a standout from the get-go as she placed fourth at state in her freshman year in both the 200 and 100 hurdles.
Last season, she was second in the short hurdles to Flatheadâs Alivia Rinehart â who set the Class AA record in the event (42.07) â and was sixth in the long jump. Harris finished just off the podium in the 300 as she clipped a hurdle in the final stretch and took seventh.
Along with the 4x100 relay, last yearâs state meet concluded with Harris competing in seven events in two days, not including the sprint prelims. To go along with Harrisâ goal of competing in heptathlons in college, Kilian supported the decision to take on the heavy workload and see where it would lead.
âThat was our conversation afterwards, like, that was a great experience (for Harris),â Kilian said. âThat was an adventure and it didnât go the way we wanted, but you can do one of two things when things donât go great. You can wallow in it or you can grow from it. Sheâs 100% grown from it and you can see it from her willingness to say, âOK, Iâm going to trust, Iâm going to be patient, and then letâs have good conversations.ââ
This year, Harris has opted to forgo the 200 and will focus on the 100 and hurdles to go along with her field events, while again anchoring the short relay.
At the Eastern AA divisional meet on May 22 at Memorial Stadium, Harris said she hopes to see gains in the long jump while getting a bit of a preview for the state meet in Missoula the following week.
âI think itâs going to be scoping out, if everyone is running, then seeing what the competition will look like but also just getting my feet underneath myself,â Harris said. âBecause divisionals is one day, itâs going to be that much in one day, itâll be a âscoperâ for state.â
Harris has taken on more of a leadership role this season, Kilian said, a trait that will continue to serve her well as she finishes out her junior year and beyond.
âThat kind of growth, those are the lessons that make you from that kind of good to great and thatâs going to carry her on into college,â Kilian said. âI think those are the areas, the unseen internal things are way bigger. The stuff on the track, sheâs already outstanding and thatâs just going to come with it.â
