UCLA secures commitment from four-star defensive lineman George Toia!
The Cleveland Guardians optioned George Valera to Triple-A as they prepare for a series against the Athletics. Valera, a key young player, has struggled this season due to a calf injury sustained during spring training.
Even though Thursday was an off day for the Cleveland Guardians as they traveled to California to begin their two-series road trip, the organization did make a roster move.
The Guardians optioned George Valera to Triple-A, with a corresponding move coming on Friday ahead of Clevelandās series opener against the Athletics.
George Valera was viewed as one of th Cleveland Guardians' key young pieces to build around heading into the 2026 season, but for a variety of reasons, Valeraās 2026 season hasnāt gotten off to how he wouldāve liked.
The outfielder suffered a calf injury at the end of spring training, which caused him to miss the last few weeks leading up to Opening Day. Valera started the season on the injured list as he participated in a rehab assignment to get back up to speed and build up for the regular season.
The left-handed power hitter looked phenomenal in his brief stint at the Minor Leagues to start the year, and re-joined the MLB roster on April 13, as the Guardians optioned down CJ Kayfus.
Unfortunately, itās been a rough start to the year, Valera, who owns a .216/.237/.297 slash line, with a 22.1 percent strikeout rate in his first 37 at-bats of the season. Heās also made some costly errors in the outfield that have hurt the Guardians on occasion.

Cleveland also thought that Valera would be forcing other players out of the lineup, but itās been the opposite, actually. Angel Martinez and Daniel Schneemann have been two of Clevelandās best hitters through the first month of the year, and warrant everyday at-bats.
With this duo playing so well, and Valera not, Stephen Vogt was simply having trouble finding playing time for the rookie outfielder. The only way Valeraās bat is going to heat up is if he gets everyday at-bats, and that clearly wasnāt going to come at the big-league level.
The question now is, who takes Valeraās spot on the roster?
Are the Guardians preparing to add Stuart Fairchild to the 40-man roster? Will Kayfus get another shot at the big-league level? Will we see the season debut of Petey Halpin this weekend?
Weāll have to wait and see what move the Guardians make on Friday before starting a three-game set with the Athletics.
